My buddy and I were talking baseball today, and were reminicing of Chris Widger foiled attempt to take the bump, and we were trying to think of position players who have pitched. Is there any way to find a resource that would tell us this odd stat?

An Indians position player pitched against the Sox in 2001 in some blowout game. Sox were up like 16-8 at the time.

I believe Canseco seriously injured himself on that pitching attempt.

Gary Gaetti pitched for the Cubs against the Phillies in that year they were really good, 1999 I think.

Steve Lyons pitched for us in '89 or '90. I think Robin pitched an inning in a Sox uniform too.

Just checked Retrosheet...

Lyons pitched for us on 6/16/1990 against Oakland (2 innings, 2 hits, 1 ER).

Yeah, I remembered the Canseco debacle and I remember Doug Decenzo (sp) pitching a game. I love useless trivia.

I remember when Wayne Nordhagen took the mound for us in 79.

Yeah, Nordhagen did it twice that year. What I didn't realize about Nordhagen until I just looked him up was that he finished his career with the Flubs (7 games).

In a similar vein, Danny Murphy began his career as an outfielder for the Cubs and wound up as a relief pitcher for the White Sox, although not an especially good one.

Bill Pecota pitched in a game for the Mets back in 1992. The Pirates were ahead 19-2 at the time.

Didn't one of the Windy City Classics end with Steve Lyons pitching for the Sox and Catcher Jim Sundberg pitching for the Cubs.

I think Mark Grace in Arizona was definitely the funniest, doing his Mike Fetters impersonation.

Doesn't exactly fit but Brooks Kieshnick the pitcher/OF/pinch hitting machine. Drafted by the cubs but converted into a reliever by the Sox. Now in the minors in Houston.

Mike Squires, briefly, in 1984 I believe it was.

I remember seeing one of the Wayne Nordhagen appearances on TV; for a long time afterwards I thought maybe I had imagined it since it seemed like everyone I told about it thought it was impossible.

IIRC, Lyons played all nine positions in one of those Windy City Classic games. And yes, Grace was hysterical with that head-snap motion, I saw that on BBTN and laughed out loud.

He did. I believe it was 1990 against Oakland and IIRC he struck out Steve Howard.
