View Full Version : 4/4 and 5/6

The Yankees will have won the baseball championship 4 out of the last 4 years and 5 out of the last 6 once Rivera finishes mop-up duty in the 9th, which is a mere formality at this point.

Now, there currently are 30 teams in baseball, and there were 28 teams going back to the beginning of the Yankees run.

Doing some math here, I'm calculating the odds of the Yankees winning this many titles, given strict odds without regard to their payroll, at:

1/28 (1996)
x 1/30 (1998)
x 1/30 (1999)
x 1/30 (2000)
x 1/30 (2001)
= 1 in 22,680,000

Now, surely the owners of baseball teams have to realize that this is an untenable position. If you don't spend the $, you simply have no chance of winning the championship. None.

Do you think the Yanks winning it all again this year will AT ALL give MLB reason to reconsider the way it operates? Compare this year to the great NFL season, where the Steelers, Browns, Bears, etc. are all having breakout years. Could this ever happen in MLB on a consistent basis?

I'm numb to the Yankees winning it all again, as I am sure many, many non-Yankees fans are. Maybe this is the sort of wake up call that's been needed.

1 in 22,680,000. Goddamn.
