I just stumbled across this nice piece of audio from Mr. Elia giving 1983 Cubs fans a piece of his mind. I found it quite humorous.

Yea. This is one of the most famous tirades in baseball history. It never gets old listening to it either...

And who do we have to thank for the Elia audio?

Funny that you posted this now, because IIRC Les "Grobber" Grobstein would do an anniversary of the Elia explosion that I believe occurred sometime in April. Grobber, please clarify.

I go to Les's website all the time. He's had the audio of the tirade posted on there for as long as I can remember. He's also thrown in some music to make it more entertaining. And yes, he always mentions the anniversary.

After Buerhle's gem on Saturday, I was watching Fox 32 talking to Paulie in the locker room and you could clearly hear the Elia tirade playing loudly in the background! Maybe I'm just imagining things but they definitely weren't listening to NPR!

1983 was also the last year the Cubs would 'close-off' the upper deck of Wrigley Field because they had so few fans showing up for their games.

Gentlemen....and Ladies.... APRIL 29 will be the 22nd anniversary of the tirade heard round the world. True I had the only mic in there for most of it(still have and still am using that mic altho Bruce Dumont wants it for the Broadcast museum once I retire it). Don Friske of the Daily Herald,Robert Marcus of the Trib and Joel Behrig of the Sun Times were the only others in there for the entire tirade. Rich King(then with WBBM Radio),David Schuster(then with Sportsphone)and Pat Benkowski(then with Q-101)arrived late in the 'event' as did Joe Mooshill of the AP.
Just for the record,a couple of times,I tried to get Lee to stop. One time I say 'see you tomorrow' and he smiled and said 'OK!'. Then he started up again, and again, and again.
He was fine with me about it(even asked me for a copy of the tape which I gave him)for a few weeks, then became diffacult. When he was fired in August(not due to the tirade, but because they sucked)he was very nice. Then 5 years later when he was Managing the Phillies,he got PO ed at me bringing up that incident. Dallas Green has been a major jerk about this since it happened and has never forgiven me for it. WHAT EVER!!!
I always did a special on either the Score or WMVP on April 29,but since I'm not on local radio, that wont happen this year unless my Friend Steve Dahl calls me up again like he did last year and in 2003.
I do have the funny 'musical version' and 'dueling managers'(with Lasorda) version on my web site, but the sound vault is under upgrade maintenece right now.We hope it will be back up by April 29 so 85% of the world can.....oh,you know how that goes!!!

Truly one of the greatest sports audio moments of the last
25 years (along with Marlins 8 run 8th in game 6 of the 2003
ALDS and Bruce Levineline's 1984 interview with Mets pitcher Ed Lynch
after the sCrUBS swept them in a Urinal DH. LevineLine's problem
started when he mentioned to Lynch that "without me,you don't
have a job".Incredilous,Lynch and the Mets kicked him out of the
clubhouse before they had a chance to pulverize him.Good Stuff).:D:

That LevineLine bit is hilarious! I've never heard of it- does anyone have more details, a story or something? Did LevineLine used to work in NY?

I have about 3 minutes of the Elia tirade WITH swear words (not beeps) and I can't remember where I downloaded it from....Grobber? (or does your version contain the beeps??)

At any rate, I love it. Sent it to my nephew Sox fan who wasn't born yet and he said he never laughed so damn hard. :D:

The only Cub manager since at least 1980 who has been re-hired as a MLB manager for another team.

"Cub baseball: It's where managers die."
