At a quick glance it appears that Paulie is the highest paid Sox player at $875 million. He is in 61st place followed by Contreras (63rd), Garcia, and Thomas who are tied for 74th place.

My initial was to look where the Sox players are, but after that, in viewing the top 25 players, I was glad for the most that these guys played elsewhere. Some of these guys are clearly being paid for their previous season's successes. Maybe 5 or so of these guys will really earn $12 million or more even though many will be paid that much.

Paulie is getting paid $875 million??? How can we not have the highest payroll in the MLB?

I think you mean Paulie is making 8.75 million.

I'm amazed that Bagwell makes $18 MM and Thomas makes $8M and they have basically the same stats.

The salary market in baseball is very inefficient and is easily reflected in how some guys are over/under paid compared to their counterparties.

I stand corrected. The Decimal Point Police have once again made the world a better place.

Yeah, some of these salaries really surprised me. Also, if you look at the Flubs, it looks like Carrie is their highest paid player.

Here's something else that I thought was interesting: The Yankees have A-Rod, Jeter, Mussina, and RJ in the top 12 with salaries totaling just over $80 million if my addition is correct. five guys make more than the entire Sox team.

Remember - one thing that skews this list is long-term contracts. You sign a guy to a 10-year deal, you'd expect to be overpaying him towards the end of that. Bagwell, Sosa, Chipper, Piazza, Walker, Bernie Williams - all are definitely on the downside of their careers, but operating under deals signed in their prime.

I think alot of us can argue Contreras is not worth 9mil.

I think alot of us can argue Contreras is not worth 9mil.And Mussina is worth $19M? Or maybe you think Kevin Brown is worth $15.7M. Hell, I could argue that NOBODY on that list is worth what they're making.

If I'm not mistaken the Yankees are picking up a nice piece of that, I think our actual out-of-pocket is closer to $6 million. Does anybody have more on this?

Other than that I like the way we have some salary balance. Some teams have 1-2 stars that they pay 10-12 or more for. We're able to spread the money out over more players than other teams might be.

You've gotta love that 20% of the highest paid players in the sport play on either the Red Sox or Yankees. Additionally, they own 8 out of the Top 16 salaries.

It's amazing these teams are able to make the playoffs. Thanks for the competitive balance, Bud!

I would rather pay Contreras $6 million than pay Kris Benson $7.5 million.
