Rich (Key West, FL.): Peter, At the completion of the 1st week of baseball has there been any player or team that has really suprised you thus far? Thanks

http://espn-att.starwave.com/i/sn2.gif Peter Gammons: (4:10 PM ET ) I would say the team that has surprised me the most in a positive manner are the White Sox. Their pitching has been outstanding, and they are playing very hard. I think the individual that stands out is Josh Beckett who has yet to be scored upon, if he keeps it up, he is going to win at least 20 games.

:whiner:
Don't remind me. I still recall Gammons predicting us to be World Series champs after acquiring Garcia last season. Or maybe that was in 2003, when we got Roberto Alomar and Everett. Either way, Gammons seems to change his picks every other day.

Yeah, I'd say so. I mean, if he's not scored on all year he'd be hard-pressed not to win at least 20. Nice analysis there, um, Pete.

I don't put any stock in what this tool has to say. I think it's natural for people in sports media to have their favorite teams and players (hey, they're human), but this guy takes it to disturbing extremes. Gammons thinks the sun rises and sets in Fenway Park, and I'm waiting for the day they crack open his computer hard drive and find nude pictures of Joe Mauer.

I am glad to see that I am not the only one that is actually discouraged by this piece of news. Talk about curses...

I'm sorry, but is that photoshopped??? Gammons playing guitar and singing on the mike??? Seems a bit far-fetched to me...but what do I know...

You guys complain when the media picks against the Sox, and you complain when the media picks the Sox. You complain when the media slams the Sox, and you complain when the media praises the Sox. Please make up your mind and stop complaining about everything.

No, I think the people who've posted on this thread have been pretty darn consistent on the "Gammons is a tool" bit.

Personally I think he's just hedging his bet. If the Sox do great then he can say "look! I told you they were good!".

Gammons is actually an accomplished musician and plays in a number of charity events every year especially in the off season. I think he played with Stickfigure at one time although I could be wrong.

To me, it looks like a picture of sir Paul McCartney 10 years from now. :D:

I will go so far as to say that if Josh Beckett does not allow a run this year he will win 35-40 games.

Not to hijack this thread.. but I'd be willing to wager that Beckett will have 4 or 5 CG shutouts this year. I don't think it is unreasonable to expect 19-22 wins and a sub-2.50 era from Beckett. He has a lot to prove this season. He's the real deal and if he can start out well (which he has) and throw like its September all season, look out. I am still not convinced that Mark Prior is better than Josh Beckett. How many world series clinching 2-hit complete game shutouts does Mark Prior have?

And while we are on the topic of Gammons/ESPN/etc... Think that Baseball Tonight will salivate over Brian Anderson and Ryan Sweeney when they come up, like they do now with Mauer and Morneau???
