Exactly...once the 6:05 and 7:05 starts, start in a couple of weeks, there will indeed be bigger crowds. People do have work and school unlike that other team.

Not only that, but the weather report kept threatening rain in the afternoon...I'm willing to bet that kept at home an extra couple thousand that may have been walk ups or even some that already had tickets.

There is no way there was 10k people there. That was probably the number of tickets sold. There are probably 5-7k season tickets sold for today in advance and the people probably didn't show up. I know at least 10 people who have season tickets who didn't go. My guess is the real attendance was about 5-6k. The stadium looked just like it did when I went the double header last May against the O's. They said the same thing then like 12k tickets sold and there was max 6-7k people there, and way less after the long rain delay.

It's always like this in April. During the summer, day crowds are much better during the week. If this team contends and wins the division, we'll go well over 2 million. The dropoffs in September have killed us the last few years.

It's like this every year; it's like a pattern. I could predict attendance each night throughtout the year.

Later on in the season, when the team is playing well and fans see that they're finally drawing 30K + crowds, then more people will want to go, and we'll start seeing huge crowds. When the casual fan sees that the Sox are drawing small crowds at the beginning of the season, they'd rather wait and go when it's crowded and buzzing. I remember last year watching one of the top stories on channel 7 news about the string of sellout crowds at the Cell... Hopefully we'll see the same thing this summer.

This is a very diverse team that is going to get some butts in the stands, especially if they're winning.

The Sox win in an exciting 9th inning comeback. As per usual, Cubbie fans gloss over the win and two fine pitching performances and want to talk Sox attendance. Actually they're really not interested in talking, it's just the usual putdown.

It's normal. People who took off Monday can't automatically get another day off two days later. I was watching the Cards / Astros game on the dish this afternoon...that ballpark was half empty as well, particularly in the upper deck.
Maybe the Cubs can sell out for the day after Opening Day but like Lee Elia said many years ago, those folks don't have jobs.

He blew two saves in a row, plus the ALCS.

Yankee fans don't take stuff like that well., They like to see their team win. Unlike fans of a certain other team (two certain other teams before 2004), they don't cheer for mediocrity just because of history (or beer).

Empty seats for April day games is a White Sox tradition. I go to about 30 games a year and you'd practically have to pay me to go to an April day game outside of the opener.

When I think of baseball at Sox Park, I think hot sticky summer nights that are so humid that it feels like you're walking under water. Oh boy. Now I'm thirsty. Quick - somebody get me a beer!

I would love to go to any Sox game no matter what the time of year. I do enjoy the summer games better, but a Sox game is a Sox game. I'll take whatever I can get, which is usually only 5 games a year.

I proud I did my part and showed up, taking the afternoon off at work. There were only about 7,000 there by my estimate, but more importantly NOBODY left early. Nobody, so everyone there was a die-hard. The Cubs wish they could get 7,000 die hard baseball fans per game. I just missed grabbing Dye's HR by about 6 inches after it bounced off the first dude. It was a great opportunity to check on the FUNdamentals area with the kids. We about had it to ourselves, it's great for kids. Good news, I had the fastest radar pitch of the day:smile: . Bad news, it was only 68mph for this old guy:(: .

10,000 in attendance? According to common Chicago non-Sox fan perception/Cub fan propaganda, that is what the Sox draw every day. I hear it all the time from Cub fans - the Sox draw only 10k or so per game - so it must be true.

Seriously though, that low attendance in early April or late September is NOT going to change until the Sox have a championship season (at least deep into the playoffs) and rebuild their season ticket base. Until then, we're just beating a dead horse.
