Wow, what a ridiculous contract, I figured if he got double that it would be cheap for him.

Mark Shapiro wins GM of the year on this deal! Who's Martinez's agent? we have a couple of guys that we'd like to have look into his services!

Martinez is coming off, essentially, his rookie year. I think he played like 50 games in '03. He is therefore property of Cleveland for at least 5 years. Regardless of his stellar all-star '04, all this deal does is prevent him from going to arbitration over the next 5 years. This deal should really not be all that shocking.

This deal is certainly not terrible. This year and next Martinez gets whatever Cleveland pays--less than $500,000. On top he is guaranteed the entire payout even if he is injured seriously during this period. And at the end, he still has free agency. Now, this is not a rip-off.

Exactly. He was going to make 300,000ish this year and next pretty much any way you look at it, so essentially it's a deal to get him though arbitration with an option for his first year after arbitration. This is a fair contract IMO.
