The Sox signed pitcher Robert Person to a minor-league contract. Person, 35, is 51-42 in nine major-league seasons and last pitched for Boston in 2003. He will start at extended spring training.

IIRC the Sox were after Person a few years ago. Well now they've got him. Guess it doesn't hurt too much to give him a shot.

They had him last year but he had a season ending arm injury before or right when spring training started.

It was a torn achilles tendon.

At 35 I don't see how he could be a starter after all of his injuries

Do we still start buerhle opening day or do we give person the nod?

Well I hope we don't end up having to count on Robert Person. If we do, that means one of our starting 5 falters or gets injured AND McCarthy really gets banged up in his call up.

Or it could be shades of Cal Eldred.

Exactly. What do we have to lose?

Eveyone needs to get off the McCarthy bandwagon...the kid had one good spring and already he's a savior? He won't be the first pitcher called up...he might not even be the second.

Well, it will be interesting to see what happens. As much as Ozzie loves Adkins, he could be the first callup.
However McCarthy as inexperienced as he is, has done more than simply have one good spring. Everything he's done in Pro Ball has been sensational. Please don't use terms like "savior" or "messiah". It reminds me of a couple other pitchers on some other team.

My point exactly.

It's probably not a bad pick-up. A potential low-risk, high-reward move. If he doesn't pan out, so what. If he pitches well, he could end up helping in the bullpen if needed. Regardless, the Sox have the potential to have much more pitching depth than they have had over the past few seasons.

Person's just around to fill out the AAA roster, I doubt we ever see him go north. If some team gets desperate for a veteran pitcher and he does well in the minors we might get a PTBNL or cash around midseason for him. Basically he's just down there to share his experience with young players and show hitters what used to be major league stuff.
