It was time for him to quit. Although he's gotta be one of those players whose game and abilites I always respected. The orginal guy who showed us how huge your stats could get playing in Colorado, but he would have been great playing anywhere. Amazing hitter, solid first baseman, and twice came back after being diagnosed with non-Hodkin's Lymphoma.

ESPN also says that Kevin Appier might join him in retirement soon.

He's still alive? Yeah, wasn't he hitting like .430 in June that year? That was insane.

It wouldn't surprise me if some team that is already out of it, signs him late in the season so he can go for #400.

It's a shame really, if he had never fallen ill he would have probably hit a good amount more than 400. Maybe not 500 but at least somewhere in the mid to upper 400's
