Carl this may come as a shock to you but the first 6 weeks in Boston you were loved by the fans and media.....then you had the eruption at the plate during kids day when even your own teammates wanted nothing to do with you.

What is the biggest misconception about you?

That I'm some angry guy. That I'm hard to get along with. And that all comes from the Peter Gammonses and stuff like that because I don't grant them interviews. He was a Boston guy and they believed everything that the manager said. They want to brand me through my whole career because I didn't like Boston. I didn't like the management in Boston, put it that way, and I let it be known.

Yeah Carl was one of the nicest people to me at Soxfest. I have a picture of me and him and he signed many items that I gave him. I don't care what he did in Boston, and I don't really care too much about what Boston media thinks of anyone for that matter so I still like Carl Everett.

I hope he has changed......but for him to say he didn't like management??? Duquette backed Everett over Jimy Williams and pretty much doomed him as a manager in Boston.

Oh and Carl?

the things I have read about you is your belief that dinosaurs don't exist because they aren't in the Bible. Is that a belief you still hold? Yes. I'm always going to hold it.

I loved him when he first came to the Red Sox and thought it was a steal from the Astros

December 14, 1999: Traded by the Houston Astros (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/HOU/1999.shtml) to the Boston Red Sox (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BOS/1999.shtml) for Adam Everett (http://www.baseball-reference.com/e/everead01.shtml) and Greg Miller (minors).

at the end we were happy to get Darren Oliver

December 12, 2001: Traded by the Boston Red Sox (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BOS/2001.shtml) to the Texas Rangers (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/TEX/2001.shtml) for Darren Oliver (http://www.baseball-reference.com/o/oliveda02.shtml).

I think because ESPN is near Boston we are always hearing about the Red Sox.(and now because they won the world series) And their media influence can go along way to give Everett a bad rap.

Until this year the majority of Boston fans were pathetic like Cubs fans, content with loosing and proud of feeling sorry for themselves, so that they could say their good, loyal fans.

as for who doesn't...

1. Yanks
2. Cubs
3. Bo Sox

Sorry Boston, but although you've been second as much as we have, we all know what brought you a tiltle. It wasn't fans, it wasn't clutch play, it wasn't heart, it wasn't team spirit. It was $$$. When Sox fans on this board talk about dollars it's about competing for the love of the game.

And as for the ACC...suck it! Big Ten Baby!!

Let's see.....he was a good guy in Houston, a good guy in Texas (per mgr Showalter, who said he was the guy he wanted mentoring their younger players), and he's been a good guy in Chicago.

He was a "cancer" in Boston.

Yeah, I'm sure it's him.....

I loved him when he first came to the real Sox in a mid-season 2003 trade and commented with something like, "I'm surprised and honored that Kenny Williams and the White Sox thought so highly of me to bring me here for a postseason run."

And Everett backed it up too. He's a gamer.

Everett is a good player but a complete head case.

If Carl is such a "head case" then why did all his problems happen with the Fake Sox and only with the Fake Sox? Why is it that outside of his time with Boston, Everett has not caused any problems whatsoever?

Could it be related to the fact that Boston is an extremely racist city more than to anything that Everett ever did?

no...

but honestly I'm not convinced race had anything to do with it - more that he didn't get along with the manager for whatever reason because he couldn't get the playhing time he wanted because they had four great outfielders (including my man dante) and he is an outspoken individual. The spotlight was on him in Boston and he probably said some things that pissed some people off. So far he has been traveling at a low-level here, but rest assured if he starts firing shots people will find a reason to hate him here: i.e. dinosaurs.

I think Carl is happy to be hear since we really haven't heard anything out of him. He has looked great this spring, and I hope that carries over into the season.

Just for the record he had some baggage with the Mets as well

from all reports he was a model player in Montreal as well as Frank Robinson would never take any crap from anybody.

If you read the articles you will see race had nothing to do with his problems in Boston.

The only reason I brought this up was HE did in the Sun-Times.

Seriously, it never occurred to me that a pro athlete would be evaluated based on where he weighs in on the dinosaur issue. There a lotta players who believe goofy things (Wade Boggs + chicken; Moises Alou and his hands; managers + pitchers jumping over the foul lines because it's bad luck to step on them) but what difference does it make.

Everett had a rough time with the Boston media like many many other players, most notably Ted Williams. I'm glad for his sake that he appears to have moved on.

This might not be that big of a deal but he also said that he doesn't believe in dinosaurs because they're not in the bible. I didn't know that about him...has he been this way his whole career? Or is he one of the born-agains?

He doesn't believe that Man ever landed on the moon either. That was apparently "faked" in a hollywood studio. Carl is a different person. He's always been a hell of a player, but a little goofy... You can see from the Sun-Times interview the way that last question was posed very deliberately and leading trying to get him to stick his foot in his mouth.

Boston's media pool is vicious. Race has very very little to do with it. But Carl's beliefs make him vulnerable to attacks.

No Red Sox fan I know was ever content with losing. When the team hit rock bottom in 2001 under Joe Kerrigan the fandom was as angry as I have ever seen it.

No real baseball fan is EVER content with losing, what's your point? If Carl was such a bad guy, then why didn't something happen last year when the Sox completely folded in August?

I think Mr. Everett realized the error of his ways when he was forced to sign a free agent contract with the Expos because NOBODY wanted him. Robinson was willing to take a chance.

If feuding with the Boston media and Jimy Williams is an "error" it is an "error" that very many players have made. I don't see what the point is; why are Boston fans still sore about how he acted 5 years ago?

That's an interesting theory. However, Everett also was great for us and for Texas before he signed with Les Expos. What's with the sour grapes?

I never play for numbers. That's something I've never played for. I play to win. If it requires me to bunt a guy over or if it requires me to move a guy over, that's what I do. . . . My numbers mean nothing if we don't win.

Everett talks a good game and backs it up with his play. Sox fans don't give a crap what he did on "kid's day" in 1943. We should (and apparently do) love him for his work on the field and in the Sox clubhouse.

P.S. Jimy Williams is a POS manager.

He really left a bad taste in Boston, I can't think of anyone who left on worse terms.

What nobody here will understand is why Duquette ALWAYS stuck up for him no matter what.

Right or wrong athletes are sometimes remembered for only one thing in their career no matter what they do. Bill Buckner will always have 1986, John Pesky will have 1946, Tony Kubek 1960 etc. Everett's tirade against the umpire and then anyone who came near him lasted TEN minutes and by chance was covered by FOX and McCarver screaming "he should be banned from baseball". It was very close to becoming similar to what happened in Detroit last November with Artest.

I don't the Boston media is necessarily any more vicious than any other big city; there are plenty of threads here complaining about the Chicago media. Carl Everett and Boston, for whatever reason, were just like oil and water. He's an eccentric, and Boston seems to like more of the regular, "idiot" type guys. That's a lot of generalizating, and I'm not a media apologist, but he seems fine on the South Side, and I have no qualms with him.

It's not that we don't "understand" . . . it's that we really don't give a flying **** what Duquette, Williams, McCarver, Gammons, etc. did or said, since none of it has any bearing on how Everett will play for the Sox in 2005.

Frankly, what we can't understand is why you care about any of these things. If I were a Red Sox fan, I'd be thinking: "Thank God that Duquette, Williams, etc. are gone, resulting in a World Series victory over the Evil Empire."

He keeps bringing it up saying we didn't "understand" him

You know how bad it got? He broke up Mike Mussina's perfect game with 2 outs in the ninth and was booed by the Fenway crowd.

It was pretty funny reading that old Gammons story. He spends most of the article advocating on behalf of the incompetent Jimy Williams and Mo Vaughn (a player who had his last good season at age 32 -- two years after the Red Sox cut him loose -- and then became an albatross to the Mets). LMAO!

OTOH, even Gammons agrees with my main point:
Everett isn't the primary issue. Duquette and Red Sox owner John Harrington are. As Fenway Park becomes the Fenway Dump and Duquette acts indignant about the perception that he and his manager are light years apart and laughs when his PR columns about Williams' future always includes "if he wants to return," reality is that the owner and the CEO have been so insulated in their tower that they have lost touch with what goes on down in the real world.

Red Sox fans should be grateful that those days are long gone. In any event, there's no need to scan sub-standard, out-of-town sports sections for Everett quotes indicating that he still dislikes "the Peter Gammonses" and the former "management in Boston." That's not an entirely irrational view (unlike his angle on dinosaurs).

carl everett doesn't strike me as the type of guy to change. And judging by this article he hasn't changed AT ALL in his attitudes to the media.

So how come it was only in Boston that he was a "bad guy"?

Is the Boston media the only media to get it right?

Think about that for a while.

You're all right, fenway, but you might think twice about ripping a sox player that we generally like a lot.
