Tribune Article on sox roster (http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/cs-050317sox,1,5885877.story?coll=cs-home-headlines)

The Sox have some roster flexibility because infielder Wilson Valdez is the only reserve candidate who is out of minor-league options.

Can anybody verify this? We've had problems with the Trib fact checkers before.

Wilson Valdez has a grand total of 19 games of major league experience - all in Sept of 2004. Therefore, unless I completely misunderstand the rules, he has all his options left.

Just a miscommunication...apparently Wilson Valdez wanted to make some stew, but he was out of onions.

It depends on when he was added to the Marlins' 40-man roster. The MLB site confirms that he was optioned to the minors in 2003 (http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/transactions/index.jsp?c_id=fla&year=2003) and 2004 (http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/transactions/index.jsp?c_id=fla&year=2004&month=4).

The Marlins claimed him on waivers from the Expos in March of '02, but I'm not sure if he was added to the 40-man roster at the time. Would they have to add him to the roster to make the waiver claim?

If he was on the 40-man in 2002, he would be out of options.

Valdez did not play any games on a major league roster until being called up last September.

If a player is on a ML 40-man roster he's either:
1.) active (on the 25-man roster)
2.) on the DL
3.) on optional minor league assignment.

ML playing time doesn't matter, only that he is on the ML 40-man roster but not on the active roster.

I thought the reason we got him from the Marlins was he was out of Options for them... This would then remain true for us.

I always thought that once you're added to the 40 man, your clock starts ticking.
