Vincent says Selig must end cover-up

Dan Bickley

Fay Vincent was baseball's last real commissioner.

Today, he is but a man with a confession.

"I was wrong not to jump all over (the steroids issue)," Vincent said. "There were signs. There were rumors. We all heard about (Jose) Canseco. But the baseball world, and I was one of them, thought steroids was a football problem, not a baseball problem. We were totally wrong."

Vincent was ousted from office in 1992. That makes the current commissioner, Bud Selig, seem incredibly na´ve for not recognizing the problem until he read of Mark McGwire's androstenedione use in July 1998.

These days, Selig is looking far worse than na´ve. While he has reversed course and agreed to testify before Congress, he is too eager to pronounce the problem solved. He is too aggressive in spinning everything forward, and far too comfortable rationalizing the fraudulent feats.

Thank you.

Funny to see how Dan Bickley double-barrells Pud Selig in this article,
but just a couple of weeks ago, PRogers was praising Buds "stance"
on steroids. Too little, too late.
