Saw this press release a few minutes ago on whitesox.com

U.S. Cellular becomes presenting sponsor of the 2005 Chicago White Sox season (http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20050302&content_id=954356&vkey=pr_cws&fext=.jsp&c_id=cws)

I guess this is like the Bears' deal with Bank One, a deal in which the Bears have to say Chicago Bears football presented by Bank One. It's really minor and I don't mind it at all, as long as the money's used to further the quality on the field or the quality of the field.

Here's a sweet part of the deal for us fans
One of the unique aspects of the partnership is the creation of a jersey giveaway on Wednesdays, known as "U.S. Cellular Win-a-Jersey Wednesdays," in which 15 randomly-selected fans will have the chance to win a game-worn White Sox player jersey during each of 12 Wednesday home games in 2005. In addition, one fan will have a chance to win $10,000 on the final U.S. Cellular Win-a-Jersey Wednesday, September 21, compliments of U.S. Cellular.

I would generally hate this idea, except for the fact that I can't remember the last time I heard to the Bears referred to as "The Chicago Bears Football Club presented by Bank One". I imagine the Sox will be the same way

Does this mean we will have to hear "Your 2005 White Sox presented by U.S. Cellular" when they take the field?

I would hope it would be similar to the Bears' situation, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Sox were ripped a bit for this.

The team on the northside is already basically the "Chicago Cubs Baseball Club presented by Sears". Those dugouts are covered in ads

What do you mean by this? That the team goes down in flames without a rudder and the sponsor is merged with a New York company that runs 1,000's of job out of Chicago to satisfy the ego of the CEO of the sponsoring company?

Or do you mean after a short period of time, nobody notices the sponsorship?:D:

Hahahaha! Wow, I didn't even think that could be taken the wrong way, but that's pretty funny. Obviously your second guess.

Can somebody answer why this had to happen. Are the Sox getting $$$ for this????

I really hate this, not only becuase it just sounds stupid, but now, there is just one more thing for people to slam the Sox on. I can't wait to go into my Sports Reporting class tomorrow and listen to all the Cubs fans bash this.

With less and less for Cubs fans to bash the Sox on:D: they will have to take to using this to do just that.

I personally dislike it, but as long as the ads stay off the uniforms, it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Cubs fans would try to use it against us the same some of them ripped the Sox for selling out. They were the first sell outs in baseball history IIRC.

As long as this money goes to stadium renovations, I don't care.

This is far less important than the corporate name being assigned to the ballpark in my opinion. And we already have that, so what's the big deal? "This game is brought to you by..." What's so new and different about that? And as for the conjoined USCellular/Sox logos, they're not going to be on the uniforms, so who cares.

This is a pretty minor thing to me...i.e. I don't really care.

As for Cubs fans complaining, if the Sox won the Series they'd say the Sox were breaking from a Chicago tradition.

As long as it leads to a higher payroll, I don't care if they sell the team name outright and become the Chicago US Cellular Free Long Distance Plans.

A couple steps away from the "US Cellular White Sox" it may take a while but eventually city names of sports teams will be gone.

Maybe US Cellular will go down in flames like Bank One did and we can forget all this nonsense.

At the employee orientation they said that all fans on Wednesdays would recieve a scratch off ticket of which 15 get game worn jerseys, I can't remember what some others get but SUPPOSEDLY whoever else has a scratch off ticket gets 20% off White Sox accessories in the gift shop. There was some other prize but I forget what it was. That's what the White Sox reps said at the orientation when the press release sounds different.

no need to worry about ads on the jerseys - my understanding is that corporate logos are prohibited on MLB uniforms :D:

Not to sound negative and all, but if sox fans don't start filling that stadium on a regular basis uncle jerry is going to tell us the only way to keep the team running is by giving it corporate naming. Like the teams in korea. The U.S. Cellular White Sox might not be that far off.

Oh and BTW this was just an odd thought, I don't actually believe this will happen so don't snap at me too hard.

Does this mean we will have to hear "Your 2005 White Sox presented by U.S. Cellular" when they take the field? Of course not!!!!! If anything, the Sox ought to be going after MORE corporate sponsorhip so they can get the revenue they need to field good teams. Considering the Cubs are owned by a major media corporation that can fund the team hand over fist if it felt like it, the Sox have to do something to compete against them; let alone the rest of the league.

Face it...fielding a winner costs money. And although speking a lot of money doesn't guarantee a World Series, if the Sox keep acting like a small-market team in a major-market city, they'll NEVER get any respect.

There's something going on in the NFL that the Sox may consider. Have any of you noticed the home of the Cleveland Browns is NOT named after a corporation? There's a reason for that...and that reason is because the team didn't offer to sell the naming rights to the stadium, but instead...selling the naming rights to the 4 main gates going into the place. I actually had an idea that if were to own the team, I would build a new ballpark and sell the naming rights to the concourses instead of the whole place. That way, not only would the Sox be able to keep more of a traditional name to the new stadium, but also have more corporate sponsorhip...which would mean more money to fund a winning team.
