PLAYERS WHO HAVE TO HAVE BIG SEASONS:

4. Jose Contreras (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7043). Ken Williams says that 5.50 ERA will be a thing of the past with a new start and the help of Orlando Hernandez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6019). Williams says that Contreras will win and win big. He and El Duque are significant parts of a staff Williams believes is going to be very good.TEN COMEBACKS TO WATCH:

Honorable mention: Rick Ankiel (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6320), Joe Mays, Jesse Foppert (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7074), Carlos Guillen (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6105), Kip Wells (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6301) (should be better than his 47-50 record), Juan Gonzalez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=4398), Preston Wilson (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5994), Frank Thomas (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=4527).

I hope Contreras has a big season but you don't want to put too much pressure on him this early in the season. If anything i would shoot for Jose to have 12-15 wins this season.

I also think if Frank is healthy that he could have a big season in the RBI category with all the speed the sox have now and he should a lot of baserunners on when he is up.

Sorry, but he(edit, he being gammons) is of no use to me. great, lets take a quote from KW, and then throw it into a top ten list of people that need to have a breakout year.

yawn.

I must say that Gammons is right here. Now before you burn me at the stake, just hear me out. This will be Contreas 3rd year in the MLB. And now that he is out of NY and on a mid-level market team, he has no excuse not to be successful. This is just as much of a do-or-die season for Contreas as it is for Crede. And here is a bold prediction:
If Jose Contreas wins 17 games, the White Sox will make it to the ALCS!!

Take it for what its worth but Rob Dibble was saying when he was still on with Dan Patrick that he felt Contreras is obviously able to win 20 games and Dibble believes he will. Now if Contreras wins even 16, I think that would be awesome for the Sox. I sure hope Dibble is right. I would take his word b4 Gammons. Like I said though take it FWIW....

Didn't Dibble say he would get a White Sox tatoo if Contreras didn't win 20 games or something like that?

Has Hurt historically hit well with runners in motion? He doesn't want to be distracted from his task. I wonder if he should hit in the four spot, or even five spot, if that's the case. I like him in the three spot, but is a running team combatible with his batting style?

That's an excellent question. He's has great focus and patience, both of which can be disrupted by runners dancing on the basepaths and hit-and-run situations.

I think Rowand would make a great #3 hitter this year. We would have tons of speed 1-3. Let Frank bat 4th so that he could drive them all in. Then Frank could walk around the bases after all the Konerko HRs and give his foot a rest.

Don't forget about Garland. It's time for him to crap or get off the pot.

I agree Garland is a rockhead but don't forget that he has won more games than any current pitcher in MLB at his age. He'll be a fine 5th starter.

I think that Garland will do well this year. I mean he is expected to do better then a 5-15 record and a 9-something ERA. The pressure is off of his shoulders for the meanwhile.

Other than CC Sabathia, you mean?
