The 2/18/05 issue of the Sporting News lists Tony Alvarez as an outfielder with the White Sox, although I haven't heard much about him. He's not listed on the 40-man roster at whitesox.com. I assume he's in the minor league system.

He played in 14 games in 2002 and 24 games in 2004 with Pittsburgh, hitting .250/2 HR/1 SB in 64 AB.

Does anyone know if he's invited to spring training? :gulp:

He was invited as a non-roster invitee. Looking at his numbers, it appears he's had some success in the minors, but never really had a break out season. He's probably just auditioning for a starting spot in AAA.

Yep, Tony Alvarez used to be a stud OF prospect with the Pirates but he never panned out for them just like Alex Escobar with the Indians. Alvarez will be a NRI with us in Spring Training.
