I first read this on www.baseballprospectus.com, a great website everyone should visit.

In 1985, playing for the Kansas City Royals, Steve Balboni hit 36 HR's. The Royals went to the Series and won. After that year Balboni was traded. He ended the 86 season as a bench player for the Yankees. Imagine hitting that many homers (that was a lot for the time) and becoming a bench player.

Since 1985, as a result of this ridculous benching of Balboni, a curse has been placed on baseball. No team, since the '85 Royals, has had a guy hit more than 36 HR's and win the series.

The yankees were the only team in the playoffs last year that didn't have a 36 HR guy and they won, they are also the only team in the playoffs this year without one.

I despise the Yankees and am heavily rooting for the D-Backs, however, can this curse be broken?
