Skydome has been renamed by the communications company that owns the Blue Jays and the stadium they play in. New scoreboards and turf are coming too.

Blue Jays' home is Rogers Centre (http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/tor/news/tor_news.jsp?ymd=20050202&content_id=938232&vkey=news_tor&fext=.jsp)

'Skydome' is out (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Baseball/MLB/Toronto/2005/02/02/918097-cp.html)

I'm sure that'll fly well. Can anybody imagine people outside the media not referring to that place as the Skydome?

They're really the only game in town there (along with the Argonauts).
Eh....it's sorta like the Tribune Company renaming Wrigley "Tribune Park". They just ask how much money they want to give themselves for the naming rights.

What's weird is that the folks in charge seem to be repelled from using the definite article "the" for this stadium. It was always "Skydome", not "The Skydome". Same thing with "Rogers Centre". I don't get it.

As if it will matter much as they battle Baltimore and Tampa to stay out of "Basement".

the former skydome owners went bankrupt a few years ago..it was bought by a chicago investment firm for 75 million, and now sold to the jays for 25 million...

Gene

p.s. they should have called it the rogers skydome, or rogers center at skydome, a la the reliant astrodome or invesco field at mile high

You're both wrong. It's named after Trib writer and sometimes WSI poster Phil Rogers.

An investment firm bought it for $75 million and sold it at $25 million? Who forgot to teach them buy low, sell high, not the other way around?

While the investment group probably still owns Skydome, they gladly took $25m to upgrade it

Anybody notice that, according to the article, the Jays are going to bump payroll significantly starting next year? They apparently will have about $160 million to pay out over the next two years. It's interesting, but probably moot since that's still less than half what the Yankes will pay out and probably around 60 percent of what Boston's payroll will be. However, with this news and Sammy going to Baltimore, lower division AL East baseball is better than ever!

Huh? No, they dont own Skydome anymore. Rogers Communications owns the Jays, and they just bought Skydome also. This is such a BS sweetheart deal. That stadium cost the city of Toronto $570mil American. While it is a flaming pile of crap, it still has to be worth more than 4% of its original cost 16 years ago. Im sure the city counsel had their way in making sure that the Jays were allowed to buy the stadium. I mean, shouldn't there have been more bidders for a price of $25mil canadian? The price should have been driven up. Hell, if I was rich I would have bought Skydome and made it into my own personal mega-palace. You cant even buy that much land in downtown Toronto for $25mil.

The biggest problems with Skydome (outside of the design) stem from the Blue Jays not owning it. They had no control over the stadium, so they couldn't make any upgrades. On top of that, the previous owners didnt even keep up on maintenence. They also got no money from the advertising or consessions. This will help the franchise out alot. They are FINALLY getting rid of the astroturf (the last stadium in baseball to have it), and they got a new Diamondvision scoreboard. Jumbotrons aren't made anymore and they couldnt find parts for the one they have, so they are replacing it. Expect US Cellular style renovations in the future, although they cant possibly turn out as good as ours did based on the restrictions of the stadium.

Yeah, you're right. I read a sentence wrong in the article....I thought it was naming rights and not full ownership.

Big Question, is the new turf, will it Affect the Toronto Black Jays
the first few months. Remember how the Twinks were "lost" for a couple
of months .......

Centre? That is so stupid. This is not a hockey rink we're talking about (no matter how much Tornotoans wish it were).

It is a multi-purpose facility (baseball, football, concerts, mass public events), same as the Air Canada Centre. I don't like the name because it sounds like Rogercentre when you say it out loud. Or is that my backwoods canuck accent? :?:
