I thought about the Sox trading Ben to the Dodgers as soon as they signed AJ, but without Burke on the roster, it's too risky to trade Ben for probably nothing.

I believe Jamie Burke will end up back on the White Sox. Even yesterday, he was at a Sox function.

Agreed. Ben Davis doesn't have much trade value. We'd probably be better off keeping him as our backup catcher. Unless the difference between Davis and Burke is needed for another addition (Iguchi?), trading Davis doesn't make much sense.

I am not quite sure I understand why the Dodgers would want Davis. They already have 2 really bad catchers, Bako and Ross... From these two guys, Davis would be a step up, though.

From what we would realistically receive in return for Davis, nothing on the Dodgers 40man roster excites me too much...

What if we traded him for a mid-level prospect then used the $1 mil in savings to sign Iguchi?

Ya know, I was thinking that shortly after clicking the "Submit Reply" button... Antonio Perez, infield prospect, looks good to me and the concept of freeing cash to sign Iguchi is great.

Burke was designated for assignment on 1/7. What's the rules on this again? IIRC they've got 10 days to trade him. Can they pull him back? What happens after 10 days?

Burke was designated for assignment on 1/7. What's the rules on this again? IIRC they've got 10 days to trade him. Can they pull him back? What happens after 10 days? From the Dictionary of Gambling (http://www.dictionaryofgambling.com/):
When a player has been designated for assignment,
his team has 10 days to decide to return him to the active roster,
outright him to the minors, trade him, or release him. A player may
only be designated for assignment if the 40-man roster is full and a
player needs to be added. If a trade is made, a player is often
designated for assignment to make immediate room for him on the 40-man
roster. Most often, a player is designated for assignment when the team
doesn't have time to wait for him to clear waivers to add another
player to the roster. Often a player designated for assignment is just
being passed through waivers so he can be outrighted to the minors or
released.

IMO Burke will be in the Sox organization this season, whether it's at AAA or as a back-up to AJ.

I could only see this as a way to free up money to sign a free agent MIF. Hopefully Iguchi because I don't know who else is left. Otherwise I don't see a point in this unless Burke will be back with the team, which I hope he will.

Yeah, where was the Ben Davis mention?Look at the column on the right. It's called, "The Buzz," and it's by Bob Nightengale. The second to last line says that the Dodgers are talking to the Sox about Ben Davis.

I saw someone mentioning Antonio Perez in the possible Ben Davis trade. Here is his scouting report from ESPN.com

Perez has an aggressive hitting style that needs to be refined as he learns the strike zone. During his hot streak, he was swinging at strikes. But once opponents found out he would chase pitches off the plate, they forced him to swing at bad pitches, and then at worse pitches, cutting down his confidence. Perez came up as a shortstop but seems more suited to second base, especially because of his limited arm strength. He has decent speed but a lack of concentration contributed to several baserunning mistakes late in the season.

Geez Perez sounds like a D'Angelo Jiminez clone!

this would be a good move, but I don't know how that would go over with Garcia. I thought he was pretty partial to Davis. We have Jaime to back up AJ, and we definitely need depth in the infield. Even if it's not a starter calibur person, we need someone better than Valdez waiting on deck, in case something happens.

I think that was just an excuse to give Davis playing time for a while. Same B.S. as the Maddux/Bako combo. Davis rarely caught Garcia in SEA, and the same with the other duo in ATL, but it was a good way to give the main catcher a day off

Yeah, I doubt that would be a big deal. When we got Davis he wasn't even catching in the majors, he had been demoted to the minors in favor of Pat Borders. Garcia didn't raise a stink then if I recall.

I hope we can trade Davis, at least we'll get something for him. Not like what we'll get in May when we have to cut him for batting .150.

If this guy wasn't the #2 overall pick in 1995 would we be having this conversation? He's nothing but another guy who was drafted out of High School because of "tools" and found out that his "tools" don't work in the bigs.
