We should all cheer for the Yankees because of the suffering New York suffered on September 11th
Wrong. I will be for the Yankees if they reach the World Series, but only because they would be representing our team's league. Nobody here disputes the horror that New Yorkers continue to experience from that horrid day in Lower Manhattan. The WTC office workers, FDNY, NYPD, and Port Authority personnel who all perished when the Twin Towers were destroyed are heroes to whom we should all look to.
However, that does not mean we have to adopt the Yankees as the team to rally behind. Regardless of whether the Yankees win or lose, it will not change the heoric impact of Mayor Giuliani's leadership. It will not make those who gave their lives greater or lesser heroes. We all want New York to win, that is, win against the horror of September 11. That is not the same thing as wanting the Yankees to win their 27th World Series championship.
