View Full Version : Which turn back the clock night do YOU want to see in 2005?

In another thread, someone mentioned that Brooks Boyer wants the Sox to wear 1959 throwback uniforms for one game during the Sox-Dodgers series at the Cell in June. I would love that personally, infact, I also emailed Brooks about it. Though I was not yet around in 1959, that is my favorite team, and I love their uniforms. But my question for everyone on WSI is, if you could pick one turn back the clock night for the Sox to have in 2005, which would you pick and why? I imagine they could bring in living members of the teams (for some years) and have a pregame ceremony. The Sox would also wear throwbacks during the game. Check all the apply.

On another note, I have always felt that if we were to return to the World Series during a time when our country is at war, we should wear the 1917 World Series jerseys, or a red white and blue star studded version of our current unis.. It would be ultra classy and good Karma.

I myself wouldn't mind if any of them were worn next year, but the 1959 and 1983 jerseys have a special place in my heart. Its amazing to think of all the different logos, designs, color schemes, and jerseys the Sox have worn in their 104 years of existence. Ths cool thing is, all the jerseys are so very different, but so inherantly White Sox. The current jerseys are just as symbolic of this franchise as the 83 "softball" jerseys, the shorts and collars, the little known late 60's blue jerseys, and the 1917 jerseys. While we have had some crazy desings, I can honestly say that I dont dislike any of the jerseys we have worn.

I'd like to see 1919. What the hell, it'd generate a little publicity. Nothing wrong with that.

However, Bud Selig probably wouldn't go for it.

Not sure why but I'd get a kick out of watching Shingo enter the game and he's wearing shorts.

My choice isn't on the list. I'd love to see the 69-70 jerseys, those are my all time favorites. Both the road and the home, but especially the road versions. But from the list, I'd like to see the early/mid 70's red pin stripes.

Ok, I don't know which jerseys they are, but the ones that David Wells made famous. They were home jerseys, mainly white, with a big S and the O and X inside the X, navy colored. The S had stars, I believe, on it. I don't know if they wore them last year, but a few years ago they would wear them once in a while on Sunday home games.

My guess is that they'd use the 59 jerseys in the series against the Dodgers. Possibly the reason for the premium dates

They wore that jersey in the World Series to show support for our troops in World War I. We wore those replicas in 2001 on Sunday home games.

I remember seeing one pic of him wearing the jersey. It was all untucked and reminded me of the early 1900's for some reason. Ever since I saw that pic, when I flashback to those jerseys, I remember him wearing them.

I love those jerseys. Any idea where I can buy one?

Actually, if you are a size 44 or large, I have a Konerko one I will sell. It is in perfect condition, only worn once. Unfortunately, I outgrew it. Sucks for me, because they dont sell them anywhere anymore. I had to look far and wide to find mine when I got it in 02. Those were sweet jerseys.

Well, I voted for the '59 uniforms because I figure it might be some kinda good luck since it was the last time the Sox were in a World Series. And I was a kid then, a pretty new fan and that was the uniform of all my boyhood heroes. However, thinking about it, those uniforms could end up being a jinx, so maybe the '70 red pinstripes would be better. They were definately cool uniforms and came from the days when I went to a helluva lot of games.

I love those late-80s "small e" jerseys the Sox wore. Aside from the present, they are my favorites and are a lot better looking than the 1983 jerseys people fawn over for some reason. The red pinstripes are a nice look, too, and I've never seen them on display during a game.

Educate them on what happened the last time these teams met in the World Series. All of the 2006 season should be inundated with commemorative stuff.

Because the Dodgers are coming to town it should be the 1959 jerseys for obvious reasons.

By the way the red pinstripe jerseys made their first appearance in 1971...not 1970.

In 2007, the 35th anniversary of the 1972 club, that's when you unveil those jerseys for a weekend as well as another weekend where you wear the 1977 uniform for the 30th anniversary of that club.

My bad, they started wearing the red jerseys in 1971, and that was the last season MLB teams wore flannel jerseys. I was looking on the Mitchell and Ness site at their Sox throwback jerseys, and I found these beauties.

I voted for the red pinstripes. Never really cared for them much, but espn showed somed footage with Sox player in the red and it looked surprisingly sharp. Besides, the 83 was just done aswell as the 1917 WS jerseys.I think there was a game against the D-Rays also where the all blue 1906 jerseys were worn. Players hated them, as I recall. Found them to be too itchy.

Two points....

ESPN recently showed 'Goose' Gossage in his red Sox uniform pitching to Pete Rose in the 75 All Star Game in Milwaukee..

Two it's interesting that Mitchell & Ness says it's a 1980 Sox jersey with Fisk's #72. Fisk didn't join the Sox until March 1981.

Intersting to look at...fun periods in Sox history, but this only solidifies in my mind how good the current jerseys are. The current set of jerseys, both home and away, are without a doubt the best in the history of the franchise and should NEVER be touched. The color scheme and design are classy and traditional, just a perfect combination. I don't mind pulling out the old threads one weekend every other year for a Turn Back the Clock, but anyone who thinks they should ever revert back to any of these old jerseys is crazy.

I HATE the red outline around the old english S-O-X. The red tends to blend with the blue and make the whole word chunkier and more difficult to read. It looks like a purple blob from afar. The great thing about the silver lining around the S-O-X on the current unis is that it keeps the word looking sleek and easier to read. It's classy. It's a better design.

Actually, the Sox' colors then were black and red, not blue and red. I don't think the colors mesh at all. While I love the current Sox jerseys. I think they should change the gray outlines on the home and black jerseys to either a darker gray or a shiny silver like the Mariners used to have on their jerseys. As it is, the alternate jerseys look like the numbers and letters have a white outer border on TV most of the time:http://mlb.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/p643565dt.jpg The outline is gray, but just barely. If it was darker, it would be more distinguished from the white. If it was a shiny silver, I think it would look good, also.
The problem with the home unis if that whenever they are shown in direct sunlight, the gray blends in with the white. On TV it looks like the logo and numbers are black with a white outline.
http://mlb.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/p643561dt.jpg
That outline doesn't look gray. The Sox need to better utilize the gray/silver in their uniforms. I believe as the years went by, the gray has gotten gradually lighter.

I voted for the í77 uniforms. I think that the mid-40ís uniforms (the jerseys with the piping and a big "S" containing the "o" and "x", and "C" caps) would look good on todayís players for a change of pace.

I love the turn-back the clock concept. The thing that made the first turn-back-the-clock game so cool was that the Sox tried to fully recreate the 1917 experience: 1917 ticket prices, no electronic scoreboard or PA, ushers and roaming musicians wearing 1917 era clothes, etcÖit was an experience Iíll never forget (and Iíll never forgive Steve Lyons for blowing the huge lead the Sox had built). The major flaw was that the Brewers wore their crummy everyday softball-style unis for the game.

Does anyone remember the turn-the clock-ahead day a few years back? That was an interesting idea that played out horribly. Instead of employing some creativity, I think all the teams just enlarged the logos from their caps and put them on their jerseys way off center. It was sad.
