Angels general manager Bill Stoneman is left to ponder if the remaining targets on the free-agent market -- such as left-handers Eric Milton and Odalis Perez -- represent an upgrade on the current five-man rotation of Bartolo Colon, Kelvim Escobar, Jarrod Washburn, John Lackey and Paul Byrd.

Stoneman was expected to shop Washburn and could have considered not offering him a contract by Monday's deadline for arbitration-eligible players, saving the club about $7 million.

Stoneman said he will continue to try to improve the club, but he may be less inclined to do so with Clement off the market.

"We're pretty darn good right now," he said. "There's still deals to be done, but there's a possibility we'll look the way we are. I wouldn't jump to a conclusion because one player signed. They have to get rid of Washburn to make it work, so I'm thinking that means we have a leg up on them.

Ricciardi has about $7-8 million left to play with out of his $52 million budget and he said he'll use it to address his needs in the bullpen and to try and acquire another bat, preferably one that hits from the right side.

He has zero interest in acquiring a Grade C-type pitcher left on the free-agent market.

"At this point just to get a starter for the sake of getting a starter, to throw money at him just to say we got a starter, we're not going to do that," he said. "We'll put (Miguel) Batista back in a starting role and maybe go out and grab a left-hander (reliever) and make our bullpen stronger."

They dont think that highly of Perez either it seems. KW really has an opportunity to go and get Odalis if he so choses with a 3/21 or 3/24 contract.

Is Perez healthy? I thought he had some shoulder problems. Also, isn't Perez a fly ball pitcher?

His G/F ratio is about 1.64 or so, I don't know where that puts him in comparison to others.

I don't know if he is healthy, but i consider him to be better than clement, but that is my oppinion of course. I also considered him and Clement to be the best 2 FA pitchers available this offseason, and yes that includes Pavano and Martinez.

On another note, I want nothing to do with Lowe unless we get him at 3-4 mil a year

isn't Perez a fly ball pitcher?I have no idea who started this bull****, but he would have the best GO/AO ratio on the staff if he pitched for us.

Year GO/AO
1999 2.65
2001 1.47
2002 1.34
2003 1.94
2004 1.83

Perez on the road the past few years: 320.2IP / 1.20 WHIP / 4.09ERA, 1.70 GO/AO.

SIGN THIS GUY!!!

I'm no big Perez fan, but how is he a grade C pitcher? I know he's no Clemens, but there aren't tons of guys out there who put up the numbers he's had the last 3 years. Sure, he benefits from pitching in LA, but he had a lower ERA on the road last year. 3.55 era in 604 IP - only 128 BB - the last 3 years. Yeah, this guy is a C grade pitcher, all right. The sox need to sign this guy!

In late June/early July he had some inflammation in his rotator cuff and went on the DL for a very short stint and he had a start cut short due to muscle tightness in September. He doesnt have many problems per se, but he's 6'0" and 150 pounds, so you have to be careful with how you use him. If in doubt, put in a reliever. He averaged about 6.1 innings per start.

In terms of him being a fly-ball pitcher, he's not. If you want some guidance as to what kind of a pitching style he employs, look to what Buehrle did last year with a decent amount of K's, very low walk totals, a mediocre BAA and a not so great rate of yielding homers, but lots of Groundballs and double plays.

Levine should have used the words "window shopping" instead of looking.

We need this guy. There is no way we can go into ST with a question mark at the 5 spot.
I don't care if we have to overpay a bit, just bring this guy in. There is nothing left.

Step up to the plate and get it done KW.

This year, when it comes to signing good fa pitchers, we can all sing the Ten Little Indians song.

"He's sort of an odd looking man, don't you think?"

:reinsy
"Yeah, he looks kinda mean."

:KW
"No kidding. I wonder what he's so mad about."

:reinsy
"Who knows. At least we looked at him. Let's go."

Even if he is, that's good news, because he would replace a grade F pitcher in the rotation.

Unfortunately, I think that Jjav's interpretation of the "Sox looking at Perez" rumor is by far the most accurate one anywhere in this forum.

Perez looked like crap against the Cardinals in the first round of the playoffs. He got lit up in game one and IIRC got demolished in game four on short rest. I know he has a great numbers the last 3 years, but I want a big game pitcher like DEREK LOWE.

Is there a chance KW might go after Washburn?

There probably is, but they have to get rid of Washburn to possibly get Odalis, so I dont think Kenny wants to do that, but I could be wrong.

I don't think we're going to get Odalis. I doubt we'll sign another impact free agent ever again. EVER.

Thanks Albert. And Jamie.

*****!

Lowe had a WHIP of 1.66 and only pitched in the big game because of Pedro, Schilling, Ortiz, and Ramirez.

I'm glad KW and the other scouts don't decide on which players to get by looking at a SINGLE game.
