Ken Rosenthal reports...ANAHEIM, Calif - The Angels have emerged as the front-runner to sign free-agent center fielder Steve Finley, a move that would end their pursuit of Carlos Beltran, Sporting News has learned.

Finley, 39, is close to signing a two-year contract with the Angels that probably would include a salary of about $10 million per season. Beltran, 27, is seeking a 10-year deal with a salary of at least $15 million.

The signing of Finley would give the Angels the flexibility to continue other pursuits, including a possible trade for Diamondbacks left-hander Randy Johnson, signing of a free-agent pitcher like Carl Pavano and addition of a shortstop like Orlando Cabrera.

The Giants have been pushing hard for Finley, as have the Diamondbacks. With the Angels out of the picture, the Astros, Cubs and Yankees would become the leading suitors for Beltran.2 years, $20 million for Finley? :o:
