can they sign him at all? Or is this when you can offer players arbitration? I don't know what the whole deal with that is.

can they sign him at all? Or is this when you can offer players arbitration? I don't know what the whole deal with that is.They have to offer him arbitration before 11 PM CST tonight or they lose negotiating rights until May 1. It has been reported that they won't offer him arbitration. Levine reports that the Cubs are on the verge of getting him signed, though. We'll see what happens. A little over 7 hours left. They'll probably get something done.

If they don't sign him today, they have 2 choices:

1) Offer him arb, in which case he will make a minimum of 80% of his last year's salary. $11.5 * .8 = $9.2mil. The caveat is that that's guaranteed, not incentive-based.

2) Decline to offer him arb, in which case they can't resign him until May 1

Of course, they may reach an arrangement that they'll offer arb and he'll decline so that they can keep negotiating. Arn Tellem would likely hold to that, whereas a guy like Boras may well turn on the team in that scenario.

Levine reports it done. 1 year, $8 million with incentives possibly reaching $11 million if all the incentives are met.

And just like that, it's done: 1-yr, $8mil base with incentives to make up to $11. No options on either side.

Likely takes them out of the running for beltran unless they can deal Sosa and not send a ton of $$$ along with.

EDIT: Damn jjav - you're quick on the draw!
