The position became available last week when veteran Guzman signed as a free agent with the Washington Nationals. While the market remains full of veteran shortstops like Jose Valentin, Craig Counsell and Pokey Reese, none of them will be wearing Minnesota uniforms.
"Our shortstop search is over," Twins general manager Terry Ryan said Tuesday. "We feel good about the people we already have in the organization and this man who is joining them."
A 10-year Major League veteran with the Dodgers and Reds, Castro is a .226 hitter lifetime. He spent parts of the past five seasons in Cincinnati and has earned a reputation for playing solid defense in mostly a utility infielder's role.So it looks like Valentin won't be a Twin now. The Twins are happy to have a career .226 hitter as their starting SS. Even Valentin is a better hitter than that. But he's good defensively which is what the Twins like.
