The position became available last week when veteran Guzman signed as a free agent with the Washington Nationals. While the market remains full of veteran shortstops like Jose Valentin, Craig Counsell and Pokey Reese, none of them will be wearing Minnesota uniforms.

"Our shortstop search is over," Twins general manager Terry Ryan said Tuesday. "We feel good about the people we already have in the organization and this man who is joining them."

A 10-year Major League veteran with the Dodgers and Reds, Castro is a .226 hitter lifetime. He spent parts of the past five seasons in Cincinnati and has earned a reputation for playing solid defense in mostly a utility infielder's role.So it looks like Valentin won't be a Twin now. The Twins are happy to have a career .226 hitter as their starting SS. Even Valentin is a better hitter than that. But he's good defensively which is what the Twins like.

I believe they're intrested in Valentin as a DH.

I believe they're intrested in Valentin as a DH.Agreed but I don't think they want to pay him $3+ million a year to DH.

I'm just going to jump on the Twins Blogging community bandwagon and say that I just don't get this deal.

The dollars are fine. But the length of the deal is goofy. He better be able to walk on water or have some sort of great off-field reputation to justify this kind of madness.

Don't worry, I'm sure he'll hit about .280 next year including some clutch hits against the Sox...

I went to school with a guy named Juan Castro ... doubt it's him though, unless he started in the minors back when he was 10.

The Twins want Jose to be DH and backup IF. That will all depend on what the market bears for Jose. Someone mentioned 3 million. I don't see Jose making that much money.

I could actually see Jose signing with St. Louis.

Terry Ryan just dropped a notch in the GM standings...
