What? He is going to the Tigers? Link?

I heard on WGN news today (bias as it is) that he will not decide his fate until after Thanksgiving.

hey going to the tigers
probably not. That is just one of teams interested per espn. Most likely he will go to the cubs, giants, or indians. But probably the cubs becuase they have the most $$ to spend of all three. The tigers already have a closer in urbina.

Urbina is now available.
Considering the GM of Detroit was quoted as saying you can never have enough quality arms in the pen i doubt this makes Uribina available. More likely detroit will now have the best set-up and closer combo in the legue, great 19 games against that.

How can he play for the Tigers AND the Cubs? I mean everyone knows that he's coming to Chicago because he just wants to be a part of Dustyball.......

"Two closers better than one? The Tigers signed Troy Percival (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1925075) to a two-year, $12 million deal, Jayson Stark reports. Detroit exercised Ugueth Urbina's option earlier this month."Damn, Urbina AND Percival.

Per ESPN.com. They already exercised there option on Urbina. That will be a decent bullpen.

I know the chances of an inter-division trade is unlikely, but after the Percival signing, could this make Urbina available? According to rotoworld.com, it could be.

"ESPN's Jayson Stark is reporting that the Tigers have agreed to terms with Troy Percival on a two-year deal, $12 million contract.
Ugueth Urbina is about to become available in trade talks. The Tigers will talk about keeping him and using him as a setup man, but that'd be a waste."

Does that make us the fourth best team in this division yet or do we have to wait until they sign Kent?

Yahoo sports is reporting it as well. Urbina would be a good fit for the Sox, except he will close - not that I am upset with that - but Shingo has not done anything to cause him to lose his job.

Would you mind paying him 2.5 million in 2005 to setup? I think that would be a waste, but what do you all think?

That's pretty sad that the Tigers are grabbing players we should be at least considering. But, you gotta wonder how many opportunities will he have to save ball games? I'll admit the Tigers are making improvements we are still talking about the Tigers...

I can think of about 18 games he'll have a chance to save...

If Percival is worth $6 million/year, I wonder what Armando Benitez will get. Maybe 3 years/$24 million? Way out of the Sox' league, that's for sure.

The price of poker has gone up and KW wasn't given enough chips to stay in the game.

Right. I can't believe how much faith people have in Cleveland and Detroit.

Detroit has NO starting pitching. Maybe 2 goods guys, You think its bad having not 5th starter? They'll have at least 2 spots like that. Their offense is fine but if they trade Urbina they'll have a weak pen with a good closer.
To me, 2004 Indians = 2000 White Sox. A decent offense that really overperformed, no bullpen, and weak starting pitching.

We don't want Percival or Benitez anyway. Percival is 35 and has battled injuries the last two years. Benitez always folds in the big games. Ask any Mets fan. They just aren't worth the money they're asking for, and in Percival's case, the money he got. I'm comfortable with Shingo as closer. We need to find some reliable middle relief help somewhere. There aren't a host of great options out there, so I guess we're going to find out whether Shawn Chacon is the answer.

You read my mind. I immediately thought of the pre-season predictions from the baseball talking heads that the Royals were going to be a force in the division for 2004. Look for the same predictions to happen if Detroit signs one or two more guys. With no starting rotation, it ain't gonna happen.

I think that an automatic 8th inning guy is worth every penny of $2.5 million.

I think that we should have trumped that 2 years, $12 million to both significantly upgrade the bullpen AND keep the guy away from a division rival.

I was really hoping against hope that we would get this guy.

I don't know. Benitez has a much shakier track record than Percival.

I don't think the sky is falling. Either the Sox will be predicted to finish last and they end up in 2nd, or they're picked to finish first... and up in 2nd.
