View Full Version : Another Sox/Astros comparison...

The only reason I do these is to attempt to analyze why we crap out in the playoffs.

Anyway, no number 1 starter and really no number 2. Compare that to several teams that have 2 legitimate #1s: braves, snakes, As, yanks, perhaps the Ms. Cleveland has 1 when Colon is on his game.

Now Oswalt and Buerhle may become #1s - they were rookies so we'll have to wait. But even so, the other teams have big time vet #1s.

The hitting doesn't happen as much in the playoffs - you aren't facing Tiger pitching. So the importance of pitching magnifies. Yet, the importance of depth is demphasized as you don't need a 5 man rotation to take you through a series.

My needs for 2002:

Centerfielder who can lead off
#1 starter (be it by trade or by development)
Shortstop

Juilo for CF!!!!

OK now back to the real world.
Buehrle will be the number one unless they resign Boomer.
Valentin at short.

I know that's not what Tragg wants but that's what he is going to get.

I think we should sign Jeff Weaver, then he could be our number 1 and take some pressure off Burlymon, who would start #2. Yeah, Weaver may be a prick, but that's why they make muzzles.

I'm not sure he is available.
Weaver hates the Sox with a passion, no way he signs here.

I think that bandwagon is even farther out of town than the Weaver one.

I think I'd jump on the Julio bandwagon just a few seconds before I'd jump on the cubs bandwagon.....get the point? :)

Your probably right, but we really need a lead-off hitter. If we take care of #1 only we'll be seriously improved.

If this talk about Damon is true which I doubt it is then there is your leadoff hitter. I just don't see JR signing another Boras player.

Aaron Rowand could be a lead off hitter.

Can Rowand play an above average defensive CF?

And if he could be, and the Sox think he could be, then he should have been the second half of the year - not disagreeing with you, just suggesting that since we weren't in the race, it would have been a good time to find out.

Rowand is a good defensive left feilder, which is what we will need when Carlos Lee gets traded.
