Totally WEIRD to hear the White Sox being talked about. Oftman
says he hears the SOX SAY, theyre interested in Randy Johnson, but
it is all Noise, that theres no way they will Take on Salary because
Rumbles thru the MLB are that the SOX will be Cutting Payroll.

Seems we've discussed IS HE or ISNT HE already .......
SOX are apparently a serious suitor for Omar Vizquel.

Has Ofman blamed a Sox fan yet for the grenade found at Wrigley?

Any info on how big of a cut there'll be?

In closing, Oftman was asked which set of FANS should feel good about their
teams in 2005, and he said that though the Evil North Side Corporate Giant
has to get rid of SAMMY in order to pursue some of the High Priced Free Agents
that are out there, Sheep-like fans should feel great about next year.

His outlook for White Sox Fans wasnt so good. He basically said he was
working on some stories, but the only one worth noting was that 6 teams
are SERIOUSLY pursueing Omar Vizquel, but that the White SOX were the team that would probably land him, and that it was Mutual (meaning he wants to come here).

He said that talk about the SOX wanting Randy Johnson
are true, but WANTING something and GETTING SOMETHING are two different things. He said the Big Money (read: Large Market) teams are going to makethe play for him, because of the 16 Million due the Big Unit next year.

He said the SOX would immediately HAVE TO UNLOAD a few of the HIGH DOLLAR players like Paul Konerko & Carlos Lee for starters, to make room for him. He implied that doing that would probably create more holes
in a team that Has been Very Good at Creating Holes for themselves the
last few offseasons. Basically, the Dbacks would be more interested
in unloading him outright, than finagling a deal involving talent.

Seemed to make sense .......... Telander laughed and said the SOX were NOT
serious players at all for Big Unit, its all BS and that Big Unit knows this
and wouldnt come here anyway, he wants to go to a contender.

Interesting for sure .............

Just like the Sox weren't contenders for Bartolo Colon. Or Freddy Garcia.

Right after Telander made that remark, Oftman DID say that Hey, despite
the way it looks, KW was able to land Bartolo Colon, despite the number
of teams that wanted him badly. I will say this about that, we got
Bartolo because the Expos wanted prospects, which is the ONE thing the
SOX have over the Yankees. Getting Johnson may mean we'll have to
SPEND MONEY, something the Yankees have over the SOX.

And over every other team in MLB. Where finances are the deciding factor, and the Yanks have a desire to acquire someone, they'll win every time.

the colon situation really doesnt count since new york was trying to keep him away from boston.

EVERYBODY knew that we were one of 3 serious contenders for freddy garcia.

Interesting for sure .............Playing for a contender is what most of the bigtime FA want or established players like RJ can demand/request in a trade. I am sure most players do not see us as perennial contenders. If it wasn't for money we could have something here.

does he have a source better than KW? Because on whitesox.com it says:
White Sox general manager Ken Williams told me last week that the payroll for 2005 figures to check in around the same point it was when 2004 concluded. That total should be somewhere between $63 million and $65 million

It's amazing how much curious george is biased for the cubs and not the sox!

Hmmmmmmm. If several players are DUE RAISES this year ...... and the
SOX want to keep payroll "to check in around the same point", that would
mean they would have to CUT payroll, in order to keep it the same?

Here we go again.

From the end of the year, they will lose: Maggs (14mil), Jose (5mil), Shoney (1.7mil) and assorted others making less than 1mil. Total = approx 21mil.

Raises to players under contract at the beginnign of 2003 total approx 10mil. Add in a raise for Garcia from 6.875 to 8mil (1.125), Everett from 3 to 4mil (1mil). Total = 12-13mil.

That leaves about 8mil in "disposable income" if you want to keep the season-opening 2005 salary the same as the season-ending 2004 salary.

Now if you interpret the comments (as I'm sure some will) as meaning that the season opening salary in 2005 wil be flat with the season opening salary in 2004, then Hangar would be correct in that the "losses" would total about 28mil (including Koch), and the "gains" would total 28mil (add in the full salary for Garcia, Contreras, Everett).

If there is not an increase in payroll I will be really pissed. Jery told the fans to come out and we did. Raise the PAYROLL!!
