For those looking for a good read to get you through the long winter I recommend "The Numbers Game" by Alan Schwarz.

It gives a history of statistics and their use throughout baseball history. The book is more from a historical perspective then it is on what are the best stats to use. It starts back with Henry Chadwick goes through Johen Dewan of Stats Inc, all the way through to Beane, Epstein.

Even White Sox fan (and current Red Sox employee) Voros McCracken gets mentioned.

Just my 2 cents.
