I hope your joking right???1. NO, I believe we should trade Konerko. Not because his value is high so much as I don't have the glowing respect for him that others here do. He has the worst range of any first basemen in baseball and has consistantly proven himself to be anti-clutch. And if I have to watch him ground into one more double play with the bases loaded I'm going to scream. His improvement is mostly a testiment to how poorly the team played.

2. Elo was the comeback player of the year last year.

So which part were you refering to as the punch line?

I think it's a testament to the guy, the way he hung in there after that first half last year. I remember how brutal he was for a time--it was literally painful to watch, and he always looked like he was going to cry after striking out on pitches in the zone. Way to go Walnuts. I hope next year is even better.

Exactly. Had he been injured in '03, it would be a different story.....

^^^^yeah, that @@#$er. i can't believe he took a dive for us in '03. what an *******.

geez, i'd understand if he weren't trying his damnedest or if he was trying his damnedest and never turned it around, but *****. The man had a horrible year which probably killed him more than any of us, and turned it around and hoisted this team on the back when they needed him most.

he had a bad year. was there anything he could have done this year that could have redeemed him.

and by the way - whoever said he has the worst range at 1b in the league, do you have stats to back that up? or is it just an opinion? i'm genuinely curious.

Well, per ESPN's handy sortable stats, Paulie was 12th in MLB 1Bs in range factor, FWIW.

He was also 8th in fielding %, but 22d in Zone Rating.

Those aren't by any means the be-all / end-all of defense, but they do point towards a guy who's approximately average defensively, not far and away the worst at his position.

You're such a F'n tool. When Frank won it in '02, did you say the same thing? Didn't think so. Keep your smart a$$ comments to yourself.

Saying Maggs is worse than Kong in any category is blaspheny on these boards STM. After all, Frank is God.

Um, do I detect a trend?

Frank in '02.
Esteban in '03.
PK in '04.

Do I hear Joe Crede in '05? Oh, wait, you have to have done something in your career to come back from. My bad.

Seriously, though, congrats to Paulie. I really like him as a player and a genuine, stand-up guy. (Anybody know what that means?) I hope to see him wearing the white and black for many more years.

Actually, I believe they needed him more in 03 than they did last year. Had he not slumped so badly the team might have actually held on that last month or so and gotten to the playoffs.

Last year after Frank and Maggs went down it was pretty much a lost cause no matter how well everyone else played. They were fighting for second place after that...

This is the reason I don't understand E-Lo winning that award. Here couldn't "come back", because he was never there before...

Yeah, I know right?!?! GREAT POST!!!!!!!!!! Carl is a WHOLE YEAR removed from a great season. Who could possibly rebound from that? I mean, it's not like he missed a single game from injury in 2004. It must be that he's completely lost his ability to hit!!!! I mean I could see if he had been injured at all in 2004... but no, I mean he's lousy and has been lousy for a WHOLE YEAR! Stick a fork in him!

You RULE wdelaney72!!!!

He was close. Finished second to Paulie two years ago. Would have been close last year if he'd have played.

What A Load Of Crap, You have no idea what you're talking about!
"His improvement is mostly a testiment of how poorly we played" what does that mean, Pauly was tied for 2nd in Hr's had over 100 rbi's and batted about .280 and I bet his fielding percentage was pretty good too, so if we won the division he would'nt have done those things. He was one of the reasons we stayed in it so long, now we want to trade him and what keep Maggs , now thats the guy we should have dumped for no other reason than his greed( a true case of justice with him getting hurt ), I say keep Pauly and cut magglio ordonez loose.

The Sporting News awards are based on the ballots of 552 players, who also thought Paulie to be the best 1st baseman in the AL, and named him to their end of the season AL All-Star team. It's a shame he didn't make the real AL All-Star team.

Here's Paulie's 2003 v. 2004 stats:

YEAR BA HR R RBI BB K OBP SLG OPS
2003 .234 18 49 65 43 50 .305 .399 .704
2004 .277 41 84 117 69 107 .359 .535 .894

Also, for what it's worth, Paulie's range factor per nine innings this year was 9.38, and the MLB average at 1st was 9.31. While it's not the best way to determine a player's defensive ability, it would seemingly be unfair to call Paulie anything less than an average 1st basemen defensively.

I will say, though, that I wish Paulie would draw some more walks. And look at the strikeouts; he actually struck out twice as much this season than in 2003. I really found that surprising, though now that I think about it, Paulie did pop up to 2nd quite a bit in 2003.

Congrats, Paulie! Hope to see you back next year.

Was Loaiza the winner last year?:?:Did Loaiza ever have a good season before 03? Did Konerko ever have a good season before 04? I think you'll find the answers to those two questions are different.

The very idea of that makes my stomach turn.

Congrats to the glorified Brian Daubach for pulling his head out of his ***and doing what we needed him to do in 2003. Now is the time for KW to move this scum bag on to his 4th franchise, before Konerko(verrated) falls flat on his face, and embarasses himself again.

Ouch. Please refrain from the scum bag comments. You may not like Konerko on the field, but he's one of the nicest guys on the team and he works his butt off. That is not a scum bag.

GMAB. Your hate of Konerko because of what he said against Thomas is obvious, but at least make good arguments to back it up. There is nothing to suggest that what Konerko did in 2003 will ever happen again.

Let's look at Konerko's numbers since he became a White Sox.
Year..AVG/OBP/SLG/OPS
1999: .294/.352/.511/.863
2000: .298/.363/.481/.844
2001: .282/.349/.507/.856
2002: .304/.359/.498/.857
2003: .234/.305/.399/.704
2004: .277/.359/.535/.894

Run Production/Power Numbers
Year..H/2B/HR/R/RBI
1999: 151/31/24/71/81
2000: 156/31/21/84/97
2001: 164/35/32/92/99
2002: 173/30/27/81/104
2003: 104/19/18/49/65
2004: 156/22/41/84/117

Hmmm....One of these things is not like the other. One of these things just doesn't belong. Can you find which one that is?
