What's up with dirty helmets? You guys have all seen them. Looks like they've been burned or rubbed in mud. What is it? Why do they do it? Is it just pine tar?

They put pine tar on the helmet so they can get some on their hands if they need it while up at bat.

All Sox fans over the age of 10 should remember that one Ozzie Guillen used to put pine tar on his helmet.

Absolutely correct. You couldn't even see the Sox logo on his helmet.

I definatly remember Ozzie's dirty helmet. It's not just the Red Sox this year though. Over on the Angels, Vlad's helmet was pretty bad too.
