Rivera has some kind of personal issuse in Panama, and Tom Gordon got hit in the eye by a flying piece of cork.


During the revelry, one of his teammates accidentally shot a cork directly into Gordon's left eye. Gordon, standing drenched in the far corner of the room, looked stunned as bullpen mate Felix Heredia tried to assess the damage.

"Are you okay? Are you okay?" Heredia asked, waving his hand in front of Gordon's face.

"I have to get this checked out," Gordon said.

He spent the next 15 minutes in the medical room, where team trainers tended to the injury. When Gordon emerged, the champagne had dried -- and the pitcher was furious.

"That thing got me right in the corner of my eye," Gordon said told The Star-Ledger. "I can't believe they did that."

When asked who fired the cork, Gordon replied, "I don't know. It hit me right in the face. It won't happen again, I can tell you that much. Next time, I'll have something over my eyes, I know that."

PANAMA CITY, Panama -- Two relatives of Mariano Rivera's wife were electrocuted while cleaning the pool at the home of the New York Yankees closer.

Victor Dario Avila, a cousin of Rivera's wife, Clara, and his 14-year-old son were killed Saturday, Rivera's cousin, Irma Rivera, told The Associated Press.
