Backlash from the Black Sox Trial towards Jews

Picked up the September issue of BOSTON BASEBALL last night and the cover story is a lengthy piece by Glenn Stout on the "truth" behind the so called Curse of the Bambino. Stout finds the current roots of the Curse in articles written by George Vecsey in the New York Times (1986) and Martin Nolan in the Boston Globe (1983). Shaughnessey then was given the idea by a publishing editor Meg Blackstone who got it from her uncle. ( BTW Stout writes that a new revised edition will be published this month and an illustrated version comes in January. )

Stout lays the blame on Fred Lieb who in 1947 wrote the first history of the Red Sox and went out to smear Harry Frazee because of the mistaken impression that he was a Jew. He was in fact Episcoplian.

Lieb found his insperation in a newspaper founded by Henry Ford known as THE DEARBORN INDEPENDENT which Ford backed to promote his chances of becoming President of the United States. Ford hired W.J. Cameron to ghost write articles on Jewish influence in the United States. Ford then allowed the articles to be put in the public domain and they were translated worldwide and inspired people including a young Adolf Hitler.

I find it ironic that Ford claims the Chicago Tribune was going to stop giving major coverage to baseball as a result of the trial.

These articles under Henry Ford's name are downright scary.

Have to keep in mind Ford's paper had a circulation of 400,000 back in the early 20's and people believed what they read in papers. One has to ask if Ford reporting that Comiskey was at least mulling selling the White Sox to the Asher family may have been scuttled once it became known back in Chicago. Ford and his ghostwriter certainly have an interesting spin on the entire Black Sox Trial and the hiring of Landis.


The Chicago American League Club is the most recent to attract the desire of Jewish capital. The Ascher brothers of that city have offered $1,500,000 for the club franchise. The Ascher brothers comprise a Jewish family, Max, Nathan and Harry, who conduct a string of motion picture theaters in Chicago. They have erected their own theatrical circuit. Like Frazee, they wish to add baseball to their string of “show businesses,” and are willing to pay the price. At the time of this writing, their offer has not been turned down.
