View Full Version : Sad realization for a Sox fan...

I went on Whitesox.com today, and saw their daily poll. It said "In what area do the White Sox need the most improvement?" The 5 answers were offense, defense, starting pitching, relief pitching, and "just get healthy".

I realized just how bad we really are. Are need huge improvement in all areas. We cant hit, catch, start, or finish. At least if we had consistant bats, then we could say we just need a couple defensive studs and an assload of pitchers, but no.

KW has his work cut out for him. If we are going to win next year, we will need around 15 new people on this team next year. If only a few are replaced, it will be the same ol' White Sox. If he can get this done, and build us into an all around respectable team in the offseason, he will be the talk of baseball (respectable teams dont put AA kids in their bullpen to get killed every night). I will drink to KW tonight, becuase he has a LONG job ahead of him, and frankly, he is our only hope right now. If he doesnt get it done next year, he will be fired.

And the next GM of the Chicgo White Sox is....

:schueler "I hope you didnt get used to those Midseason Trades, there will be no more of those."

I agree that KW has his work cut out for him, but I don't think that this team is going to sniff anything close to a divisional title in 2005. One of two things will happen- this team will stay more or less intact, and if that's the case he should be canned. A more likely scenario to me- he retools the team in several positions (SS, starter, a few new relievers, 1B depending on whether or not Konerko gets traded) and they look to 2006, 2007 as the comeback time. Too many holes need to be filled for this team to be successful next year.

Either way I'm hoping for a White Sox win!

Things aren't quite so bad.

Add a solid #3 or 4 type starter, one or two righties in the pen who can soak up innings and a leadoff hitter, preferably at 2b, have frank stay healthy. . and we're looking pretty decent.

it's not quite as daunting a prospect as it's being made out to be.

That all sounds pretty daunting to accomplish in one offseason, especially when so many more teams are going to be in the market for good players.

I dunno, I don't know that an Odalis Perea is going to command 8mil/yr, he's likely to be something of an afterthought after Pedro, Pavano, Radke, Clement are taken. There are a lot of veteran relievers:Steve Kline, Terry Mulholland, David Weathers, etc that can be picked up for 1-2mil each.

The biggest problem area is the 2B or SS who can lead off. Guys I think might be available in FA are: Mark Bellhorn, Mark Loretta, Tony Womack, Omar Vizquel. The most obvious trade candidate would be Jerry Hairston Jr. Alternately, you could trade for Ryan Freel from Cinci. He's really more of a 3B, but he's filled in at 2B.

My candidate's are Loretta or Bellhorn. Although he's a bit injury-prone, Bellhorn's carried a pretty solid OBP for 3 years now. He's got some solid pop and can move around to fill in at 3B as well if necessary. He should also come pretty cheap. In fact, IIRC there were rumors that the Sox were going to acquire him for Kelly Wunsch before Nomar went down, so maybe Kenny's already got him in his sights. Plus I think Loretta's not an FA. Bellhorn & ARow in front of Frank, Paulie, Carlos, Carl, Jose will be a pretty solid offensive lineup with OBP & SLG. And it lets you focus the majority of whatever resources are available onto the pitching staff.

I agree for the most part. We're going to need a SS as well- Valentin's days are numbered and unless you're thinking Uribe at short they'll need to upgrade there as well. I wouldn't mind an '8th inning specialist' in the bullpen, but any upgrades in the pen will be an improvment. This staff is just wiped out.
