you make Maggs one more offer--if he dont sign within a week say bye to him and Im on the phone with Ichiro's agent, which is gonna cause a logjam in the OF if he signs---you use either Konerko or Valentin or Lee--maybe Everett to get a good starter.
you say goodbye to Mike Jackson and try at all costs to move Borchard for whatever you can get.
That leaves Ichiro, Rowand and Lee/Everett in the OF
an infield of Konerko/?, Alomar/ Harris, Valentin/Uribe and Crede
The pitcher that you get in trade will go into the number 5 slot---but you still have a weak bullpen.

So, what do you do?

The Mariners signed their right fielder to a four-year, $44 million contract that will place him among the highest-paid players in the game.He's a nice player and he's the kind of player we need but the whole point of getting speed/singles/defense guys is to get a few of them for less than Maggs. This guy makes 11 million a year.

What we need is a guy like Luis Castillo who can bat leadoff, hits close to .300 and can steal 30 bases, lay down a bunt and can't make more than 4 or 5 million. Make a trade for him, give 'em Borchard I don't care.
