This Date In Sox History 8/16

8-16-55: Sox 5, K.C. 4 - ‘Dixie’ Howell gets the win in relief of Connie Johnson. The Sox go to 68-45 only a game and a half out.

8-16-60: Sox 3, Det. 2 - Behind the surprise pitcher of the year Frank Baumann the Sox find themselves only a game and a half out of the lead. Baumann would go 13-6 in 1960 and lead the league with a 2.67 ERA. With the win the Sox were 66-48.

8-16-67: Sox 14, K.C. 1 - Pete Ward went 4 for 4 with two home runs and four RBI’s in the rout. Gary Peters went the distance. Ken Boyer also had three RBI’s on the day. The Sox were only a game and a half out with a record of 63-51.

8-16-72: Sox 8, Milw. 6 - Wilbur Wood needed relief help but he had enough for his 21st win. Luis Alvarado supplied a three run home run. With a record of 64-46 the Sox were only one behind the A’s.

8-16-81: Sox 8, @ Balt. 7 - The Sox scored four in the 9th to tie and one in the 10th to win this one. Carlton Fisk had the two out single to tie the game. Ed Farmer would get the relief win. Sox record : 35-25.

There seems to be a theme here:

Sox are really close at this time of year, but more often than not are unable to get the job done and go to the playoffs...
