It makes it obvious, that only the AL Central can't handle Shingo. Boston hammered him.

So far it's held up but I don't think we can continue this indefinitely. Why was Buehrle taken out for Politte in the 8th? Mark was pitching well. Once again, our overworked relievers can barely hold onto the lead.

Tough series. All three games could have gone either way. That's what it takes to win in the playoffs. At least they are showing signs of life...

Even though Shingo almost gives it away, the Sox (White that is) win their 2nd straight series. They also gain ground on Cleveland, who lost in extra innings to Minnesota this afternoon.

Before anybody brings up the Shingo stuff, remember...anyone that has watched more than 2 games this year knows that Shingo seems to be a little less effective against a team after he pitches in the 8th. It's been that way all year. Anyway, I don't know many pitchers who would be able to navigate around Ramirez and Ortiz and still come away with the win. Good job. He got it done. And that's the toughest save situation he's going to see. Especially having to come in with the bases packed in the 8th.

DJ made this point and the numbers seem to agree with him...Takatsu is much better when he starts an inning, or at least does not work in two different innings. In both his appearances in this series, he came in with the bases loaded in the 8th to get one man, and then gave up 2 runs in the ninth after sitting on the bench for a half-inning.

Rats...beat me to the post-game thread. Oh well...good win for the Pale Hose, and hopefully, a sign of things to come. The Sox aren't out of this yet, and the Cubs are getting beaten 8-5. The funny part about that is there's some kid in teh front row wearing a "Sox Suck" t-shirt. Well...someone tell that numbskull to check the score of the Sox WIN, and his Cubbie BLOWN LEAD (ha, ha, ha!!!!!)

It seems like Shingo is only effective for about three pitchers lately. Anything else is a big stretch for him. Why don't they try to utilize him as a setup for Marte every once in a while, so that way he doesn't always have to be the last guy coming out of the bullpen?

110 pitchesIs 110 a definite "written-in-stone" set number for how many pitches in a game? I mean he seemed like he really had good stuff after the 2nd inning.

Jurr

Also seen today....how about the play of Valentin??? when we need a run, he gets on, steals second, and then gets around the bases small ball style to get the lead. Then, he makes some good solid plays to get the Red Sox down in order the next inning. Combine that with the good sac fly he had last night, and it looks like Jose's coming around to Ozzie style baseball.

nothing is in stone, but with a 4 man rotation now we all knew they'd keep close tabs on pitch count. personally i'd let him keep throwing.

Here's another thought: Ramirez and Ortiz were due up to start the eighth, and Oz didn't want those two to see Buerhle for a fourth time. Just me speculating; there could be any number of reasons he took Mark out.

I'm really pleased with the effort of the team this weekend. I wish we could play like that all the time. Still, for the seemingly the 80th consecutive postgame thread, I have to bring up the bullpen again. KW better get some help in here if we're going to stay competitive in the division race.

Hopefully, Sandy is OK. If not, hopefully the Sox have enough sense to send Borchard down and bring back Burke. I was a Burke-doubter earlier in the year, but at this point, I think he can help us as a bench player.

Good win. We needed this one. But I gotta admit Shingo made me do something I used to do when Koch was our closer. I had to walk away. I had a really bad feeling about that Ortiz at-bat. Thankfully he got him and managed to preserve a win. It's been a while since we've seen a Shingo 1-2-3 inning.

So far it's held up but I don't think we can continue this indefinitely. Why was Buehrle taken out for Politte in the 8th? Mark was pitching well. Once again, our overworked relievers can barely hold onto the lead. simple reason, he threw 110 pitches and if he stayed in he would end up like Prior and Wood, injured. Ozzie isn't like Dusty, he watches pitch counts. It is recomended that 110 should be the limit, Dusty goes over it and injures his pitcher, Ozzie has a brain and realizes that it is better to only have Buehrle in for 7 1/3 then on the DL

One more inning wasn't going to kill Mark, the way he was throwing today. The bullpen is tired too, Cliffey showed it today. Marte needs a break now and then too.

Just saw highlights on the Anti-Sox, Anti-Braves Show, err, Baseball Tonight, and from what I saw, which was very little for my liking, Buehrle pitched his guts out as he usually does, and El Caballo was swinging the bat well today with that homer, and how about that play at the plate in which Youkilis was thrown out. As I said in an earlier post, I think the rest of the A-L is starting to figure Shingo out, but he did manage to finish off the Red Sox, though. Great job overall in taking two out of three!!!! I hope, and I stress hope, that DA SOX are starting to wake up the bats and will play much better baseball than they have the past couple of weeks. Enjoy the off day because DA SOX have a tough test with the Tigers beginning Tuesday night. Hopefully, Garcia will shut them down Tuesday night.

Great win today, the sox are finally playing some fundamental ball. Timo is such a good bunter it's really nice to watch, as long as there is a righty out there timo should be batting 2nd every night. Anyways the next series is huge, the sox can really make up some ground, the sox play the tigers, the indians are at texas and the twins are playing the yankees.

It is definately the closest they have been to getting swept. The Indians were leading by 1 run late in the only game they lost there, only to see their bullpen blow it.

Thank you!!!

Great game today by Carlos Lee. He had the stolen base, the great baserunning play scoring from third on Konerko's groundout to the third baseman, and the HR. Also made a nice catch on the slippery wet outfield grass.

Why don't they try to utilize him as a setup for Marte every once in a while, so that way he doesn't always have to be the last guy coming out of the bullpen?

No, no, no. Leave Marte where he is. I remember the last time Marte pitched in the 9th. Victor Martinez hit an absolute bomb, and tied the game.

What we need is another bullpen guy, like Kelly Wunsch.

simple reason, he threw 110 pitches and if he stayed in he would end up like Prior and Wood, injured. Ozzie isn't like Dusty, he watches pitch counts. It is recomended that 110 should be the limit, Dusty goes over it and injures his pitcher, Ozzie has a brain and realizes that it is better to only have Buehrle in for 7 1/3 then on the DL

Plus, he was working on short rest.

my first post here...i'm glad to be talking with such great Sox fans. Nobody may agree on everything (besides we are so much better than the cubs), but I'm glad to be able to talk with such great Sox fans.

I'd definitely love to see more small ball out of Valentin. I also think we should get Burke back up; Borchard is killing me! I have to sit with the pepto and maalox for the ulcers he gives me when he bats. He needs to spend more time "seasoning" in triple A. Maybe he can pull a Ben Davis and break out years after all the expectations were put on him. I think a change of scenery here helped him tremendously, and I think that he can be a great catcher for us.
