The Indians have it... At least with a win today, the Sox will pull into 2nd by themselves. What a miserable letdown by the Minnesota Twins.

Couple thoughts now that the season's offically over...

1) I don't think I'm alone in thinking that the division is the Sox's to lose next year (assuming there's baseball next year). With all those guys returning from the DL, there's bound to be at least 3 or 4 that will be effective. The Indians are old and are breaking down, the Twins were a half-season wonder, and the Royals and Tigers are pathetic.

2) Hats off to the Sox for showing grit and determination this season, and salvaging a winning season out of all this mess. Most teams with as many injuries as the Sox had this year would have laid down and died back in May. As much as we rag on Manuel, he deserves some credit for holding a bunch of young guys together.

That said, this team is pretty well put together. I really don't see the need to go out and get many players this offseason, other than a catcher if any are available.

Here's the way I see the Sox roster come opening day 2002 (I'm not predicting any trades here, just based on what we have currently)-

Lineup -

1. Durham - 2B
2. Valentin - SS
3. Thomas - DH
4. Ordonez - RF
5. Konerko - 1B
6. Singleton - CF
7. Lee - LF
8. Crede - 3B
9. M. Johnson - C

Bench -
1. Paul - C
2. Graffanino - IF
3. Liefer - UT
4. Rowand - OF

All that's missing here is speed and a decent-hitting catcher. Borchard will probably come up in mid-season, unless there's an injury or he has an awesome spring training.

Rotation -
1. Buehrle
2. Garland
3. Parque
4. K. Wells
5. Wright

Bullpen -
1. Fogg
2. Simas
3. Embree
4. Howry
5. Wunsch
6. Foulke

If David Wells comes back, look for Parque to drop to the bullpen and Embree to be gone. If Wunsch returns to his '00 form, that will make Embree a valuable pitcher again, because he won't have to be the lefty specialist anymore, which is not a good role for him. He's a middle reliever, plain and simple, not a set-up man, and I think he can be good as a middle reliever. If Wunsch is hurt or ineffective, then the Sox are once again left without any lefty help in the bullpen, and to once again spend the season trying to find some, unless they rush Corwin Malone.

I don't know, there's a million combinations - maybe Lorenzo Barcelo or Rocky Biddle will come back and be effective. If everyone's healthy, the Sox will have some nice problems come March.

Thats only 24 people, might as well add Osuna to the pen

09-30-2001, 05:08 PM
D'oh! No, I'd add Glover. But then, we're stuck with Osuna, aren't we? Oh well, probably Simas'll be traded...

CerberusWG
09-30-2001, 05:15 PM
No, we'll keep Simas, IMO. Embree will probabaly be gone.

Also, we still have Royce signed for next year, and because he's one of Jerry's kids, he's a lock for next year. Crede will be in AAA again, or Graffy will be gone.

So it probably will be....

2B-Durham
3B-Jose
DH-Frank
RF-Maggs
1B-Konerko
CF-Singleton
LF-Lee
SS-Clayton
C-MJ

Liefer-Anything
Rowand-Bench Warmer
Paul-Backup Catcher
Graffanino-UI

Starting Rotation

Buehrle
Parque
Glover
K. Wells
Garland

Bullpen

Foulke
GasCan
Osuna
Wunsch
Simas
Fogg/Barcelo

What ever happened to Bill Pulsipher?

What ever happened to Bill Pulsipher?
He is with the team still but he isn't that good and will not be on the team in 2002.

No, we'll keep Simas, IMO. Embree will probabaly be gone.
Well he is a free agent and with all the injured guys coming back I don't see him coming back. Embree will no doubt be gone.

(I'm not predicting any trades here, just based on what we have currently)-
Well if you aren't predicting trades Clayton is at SS, but I feel he will be moved in the offseason.

9. M. Johnson - C
Don't bet on that unless Alomar has another knee operation in spring training.

Pulsipher blows.

But still a disappointment. We didn't go to the damn playoffs!!! That SUCKS!

"Let the team on the North Side of town settle for respectability."

Slezak and KW have the rigt idea. Another off season watching other teams have a chance at a WS.

Crap..

lets cut Osuna some slack--he was hurt in 2001---its goona be interesting if Cleveland and the Sox are both healthy next season---but poor Sandy Alomar--last year he was with the Indians--the Sox go the playoffs--this year he has to watch his former mates in the playoffs while the Sox stay home

A few more things missing: up the middle defense, a lead-off man, and a lack of on-base personnel. I can live with Johnson - he's the least of the problems. Yes, we'll probably win the division with that, but nothing else.

We need to fix our serious flaws.

I'm not sure he'll be back. Clayton has a clause in his contract that says he can demand a trade. So he'll probably be moved. I see the lineup like this.

2B-Durham
SS-Jose
DH-Frank
RF-Maggs
1B-Konerko
3B-Leifer
LF-Lee
CF-Singleton
C-M.Johnson/Alomar

Rotation is tough..We don't know who will be good in SpringTraining and if Wells is coming back or if we make a trade for another veteran starter, but right now it is:

Buehrle
K.Wells
S.Lowe
Garland
Glover
as of right now, but it will change.

Bullpen

Foulke
Howry
Osuna
Wunsch
Simas
Barcelo
Glover

The tough part is who will start and who will be the setup guy. S.Lowe, or Glover. Who knows, both might start and K.Wells could go into the bullpen.

But if everybody comes back to form our bullpen will be much DEEPER and we won't have to keep on bringing Howry every single day. He could be our 6th inning guy. Glover can take his place.

I just want to see this team at FULL STRENGTH. We have 82 wins not at full strength, how many wins could we tag on to that total at full strength? I say about 8 or 9 wins, and fighting for the division. But if all things go as planed, we should have over 91 wins next year, at LEAST 91 wins. I just hate taking crap from all the Damn Toon fans. I hope they get trashed in that first round. That would be sweet. :)

Oh, that would be so beautiful. I just might shed a tear.

In a perfect world here's my lineup:

2B-Durham
SS-Valentin
DH-Thomas
LF-Ordonez
1B-Konerko
RF-Borchard
CF-Rowand
3B-Crede
C-Johnson

Bench- Graffinino Liefer Paul others

Rotation(I'll need to explain this)
Buehrle
K.Wells
Garland
Fogg
Wright/Rauch

Fogg has really grown on me in the few apperences ive seen the curve is just "filthy" as they would say on BBTN, he is going to be playing winter ball along with Garland, which will improve both of them. I think Kip is going to have a great Spring Training, and Wright will have an Ok Spring beating out some of the people that will go into the pen. Rauch I belive will come to Spring Training but will work on his mechanics in AAA and will called up Mid-Season. Which leaves Wright to either be in the pen or AAA

Bullpen
Closer-Foulke
Setup-Glover
Holder-Howry
Middle Relief:
Lowe
??????????
All the young guys in AAA or the guys who didnt make the rotation
All the Labrum Group who knows???

It's funny how many years in a row I keep hearing how old the Indians are, and yet they still keep winning.....

What the hell is Liefer doing at third? I realize that he needs to get some AB's, but not at the cost of Crede's advancement. This kid has done his time and it is time to see what he can do. It would be a waste of talent to keep Crede in the minors any longer. IMHO!

Outcast, even you have to wonder if the Indians would have had champagne yesterday had the Sox played at full strength all year.

The best team won, but you still have to wonder.

Manuel made some comments that he wants to fit Liefer's bat in the lineup somewhere. Jeff is going to give 3rd a try in winter ball. If Clayton is still here next year I would assume Valentin would be the starter at 3rd.

In Jerry's doghouse where he has been since last September.

"Hamstring, Shramstring. The Milkman had better start playing!"
