The Mets (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/team/71607) are the winners of the Kris Benson (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/player/85767) sweepstakes, acquiring the righthander along with two minor leaguers for third baseman Ty Wigginton and Class AA lefthander Matt Peterson. The Twins (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/team/71595) also wanted Benson, but the talks broke down when Minnesota would not part with Class AAA outfielder Jason Kubel. The Braves (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/team/71601) also made a last-minute bid and apparently were willing to part with one of their top pitching prospects, believed to be Class AA righthander Jose Capellan.

Benson, a free agent at the end of the season, is 8-8 with a 4.22 ERA this season. The Mets (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/team/71607) likely will attempt to sign him to a contract extension.http://msn.foxsports.com/story/2622984

Great. Benson doenst go to Twins and we get to keep our prospect. I would have liked to see a 3 way with us getting Kendall, but oh well.

Mission accomplished.
Great job, Kenny!

This didn't cost the Sox a single thing and meanwhile the Weenies missed out on picking up Benson. Sucks to be them.

per New York sports radio WFAN, my buddy just called me about it. No link as of yet, but this looks to be true. I do know they gave up Scott Kazmir, Wigginton, Matt Peterson (their #2 pitching prospect), Justin Huber (top catching prospect) and Joselo Diaz (unhittable fireballer with control problems). Ed Coleman and Mike Francesca confirmed it. Not a rumor, has been confirmed. I don't know if the White Sox were involved, but it has to do with them.

EDIT: Well, I was a little late to that. Damn, thought I would be the one to break news here. Wealz has a link, I believe.

The Mets (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/team/71607) made two stunning trades Friday, acquiring Pirates (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/team/71609) righthander Kris Benson (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/player/85767) and Devil Rays (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/team/71616) righthander Victor Zambrano (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/player/85993).

The price for Benson was third baseman Ty Wigginton (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/player/104453), Class AA lefthander Matt Peterson and a minor leaguer, with the Mets (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/team/71607) also receiving a minor leaguer in return.

The price for Zambrano was steeper: Class AA lefthander Scott Kazmir (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/player/200111), considered the top pitching prospect in the Mets (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/team/71607)' system.

Zambrano came at a higher cost because he will not become a free agent until after the 2007 season. Benson, a potential free agent, amounts to a two-month rental unless the Mets (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/team/71607) sign him long-term.

You guys say Kenny overpays? The Mets GM just gave up a top pitching prospect in Kasmir for Zambrano, a number three pitcher AT BEST, probably more like a number four...

The Mets gave up a ton for two pitchers neither of which is as good as Garcia. This makes Williams look like a genius by comparison.

Really? Are you serious? Do you really think kenny did anything at all here?

And even if he was able to mastermind this trade to the mets instead of the twins, is that such a good thing? Benson is a .500 pitcher who would cost the twins a pretty penny in prospects.

Wow! I mean prospects are prospects but damn, they gave up Kazmir, Huber, and Peterson. Meanwhile, I wish we did what the Royals did. They picked up Jose Bautista for cash last month, and then traded him for a good catching prospect? Damn. That's a really nice move for them. The Mets are nuts. They just gave up 3 top prospects for 2 decent starting pitchers. They might not even re-sign Benson. For all those complaining about what we gave up for Garcia, look at this. The Mets didn't get a pitcher of that caliber and they had to trade 3 top prospects. Mets fans are going crazy right now.

Looks like 2 people beat me to the punch. This makes our trade for Garcia look better. The Mets HAVE to resign Benson.

IIRC, the Mets flew under the radar with Benson until last ngiht and were they ever mentioned to be interested in Zambrano?

K-dub like to also fly under the radar. Hell, when it looked like we were definitely getting Garcia, he pulled back and let everyone think the Yankees were getting him...then he went for the kill. From the way Farmer was talking at the start of the pre-game, it sounds like he anticipates a right handed batter to be brought in. Anyone else catch this?

The Mets want to win now! And all they gave up was prospects! Look at Ruffcorn, Bolton, Borchard, etc. Prospects are not sure things. Now they have two proven veteran starters! This is a great trade for the Mets! Their GM is being very aggressive and trying to make things happen!

The price of getting Benson went up, lowe. Besides the Sox rumors, it turns out the Braves made a late bid for him, too. The Mets were willing to *overpay* for Benson and that's what cost the Twins their chance of getting him.

We didn't want Benson, the TWINS wanted Benson. They failed, and it didn't cost us a thing. That's a plus for us no matter how you slice it.

There was talk about the Mets trading Kazmir for Zambrano yesterday, but it seemed like that was over when they came close to getting Benson. They've been rumored to be interested in Benson for a while.

I heard what Farmer says. I hope he has some inside info. It'll probably be Danny Bautista if anyone.

Except - they will resign Benson, he and Glavine have the same agent, so they'll resign him. But they definitely gave up way too much, Kasmir, Huber, AND Peterson. Damn... And all for one solid pitcher, and one mediocre pitcher.

Now that the Mets got two more pitchers, they will be able to trade Al Leiter and/or Tom Glavine to the Sox for Joe Crede.

I'm just saying Mets fans could use the same reasoning to justify these trades as some used around here for many of KW's moves. Just a little fun.

There's a difference between Freddy Garcia on a team in a weak division that at the time was at or near 1st place, and Kris Benson and Victor Zambrano on a team that is 3 games under .500 with 3 better teams in front of them. If they were in 1st place and traded those 3 for Randy Johnson, fine. But otherwise save your high prospects for a situation where you have a realistic chance to contend. I don't know, maybe they feel they can beat out Florida, Philly, and Atlanta and win this year. But I certainly don't so this is a bad trade for them IMO.

They're gonna need to sign him. Maybe they know something like KW did with Garcia. But I believe Anna Benson is from Atlanta and would like to go back home. She seems like the type that will dictate where her husband signs. But maybe she'll like New York and want to stay. Then again, I might be wrong about Anna Benson being from Atlanta. Not positive on that...

I hope so too. I would be fine with Bautisita. 10HR's and hitting a bit over .300, FA after this season, but is only making 4 million this year...cheap replacement for Maggs?

The Devil Rays are looking pretty good for the 2007 season. Zambrano isn't that good, Kazmir is supposed to be really good. What were the Mets thinking? Benson's ERA is pretty high for an NL team, especially for a Mets team that doesn't hit too well.

Hey, that sounds like something Jacque Jones would say... not that he meant to use teal when he was talking about the Sox, of course.

so all the posts earlier today were basically BS about the sox being involved, right? it didn't make any sense when i first read it and i probably should have known there was nothing to it.

ok so benson doesn't go to the twins. big damn deal. i wouldn't be surprised if before it's all over they will acquire someone better anyway.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING.

Wouldn't count on it...talked to a friend of mine in Boston, and it looks like the Red Sox are making a STRONG run at Bautista.

Well the Mets have Rick Peterson as their pitching coach and don't they have one of the best ERA's in the NL? Maybe Peterson can work his magic on Benson and Zambrano like he did in Oakland with Zito, Mulder and Hudson.

Great non-move, Kenny. Now go get Kendall, Catalanotto, and Hasegawa.
