I was thinking about this after the Sox scored all of their runs in the first 2 games on solo jobs. They hit 5 homers in the series, all solo.

"The Sox lead the major leagues with 90 solo home runs."

but where do they stand on "men-on-base" homers?

actually no. they are 3rd in the league with 59 homers with men on base.

but will this information change anyone's opinion of the STUPID charge that the sox only hit homers with no one on? i doubt it.

They must have caught the "Shammy" Sosa disease where you only hit homers when nobody's on base.

Well I doubt that the Sox leading baseball in solo HR's is going to change their mind either.

doesn't it stand to reason that a team among the leader in homeruns may also lead in solo homeruns?

The biggest culprit would be PK, with 21 solo shots in 185 ABs (207 PAs), as opposed to just 6 HRs in 151 ABs (174 PAs) with runners on.

In those 174 ABs with runners on, what are PK's other numbers? When no one is on, let PK swing away because him just getting on base doesn't help quite like it would with a Valentin or Lee. But with runners on, perhaps PK's HR numbers are lower because he is just trying to get hits and score runs which is what we would want rather than DP balls or popouts.

Only if we have a lineup full of free swinging, selfish scum bags, who are terrible situational hitters.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits?statsId=5908&type=batting&year=2004

W/ Runners on:
.278/.365/.430 .795 OPS

W/ No Runners on:
.292/.367/.670 1.037 OPS

Ussually, hitters are at an advantage over the pitcher when runners are on, since they can not pitch around hitters, and generally do not want to put more players on (unless there is no one on 1B). There's absolutely no reason why there should be that much of a disceprency in PK's hr/ab ratio, unless he is just simply a terrible situational hitter.
