Look, Kelly is a great guy, a real fan favorite, but, as many people have pointed out over and over and over .... he's on the disabled list:

Here's the Charlotte roster -- an * indicates disabled list (http://www.charlotteknights.com/pressbox/roster.htm)

But he's still not on the 40-man roster.

He pitched today.

How did he do?

He pitched today.Only 15 players in the entire White Sox minor league system are allowed to be on the 40-man roster. Wunsch is not one of them. Because of his veteran status, he had to be dropped from it and clear waivers to be sent to Charlotte.

Here are the pitchers on the Sox 40-man roster (from whitesox.com):

Cotts has pitched well at times, but if this team makes the playoffs, I want Kelly coming in as our lefty specialist. I still don't trust Cotts in big situations.

Of course, if we can acquire Guardado, that'll free up Marte for more lefty situations.

Wunsch is gone........ He wasn't outrighted to Charlotte just to rehab. He could have just been optioned down and kept on the 40-man if they wanted to keep him or thought he had any value.

Your probably right, but it is not uncommon to keep roster space available approaching the trade deadline.

I would also not be surprised if half the Sox roster was put on waivers as of Aug 1st.

Or even more than half....... you are right about that...... but it is not common to outright a player off the 40-man roster if you think you will use him, you just option him. Going through waivers when being outrighted is different than the waiver process after the trading deadline. Waivers when being outrighted are not irrevocable so a team cannot pull a player back off if he is claimed, like they can in August. Any team could have claimed Kelly if they felt he was worth placing on their 40-man roster.

For Kelly to get back to the Majors (Chicago or elsewhere) he will have to show he can pitch again in AAA, and do it for an extended period. I just don't see him in the Sox future, near or long-term.

In this case, it was well known he was not healthy when he was outrighted, not many other GM's are going to take the risk of claiming an injured pitcher, and putting him on their roster, only to rehab him. Kenny took a low risk gamble on him.

All true....... but he also did it when there were at least one or two open spots on the 40-man roster at the time.

If injury were the only reason, I believe he would have been protected by the Player's Association. He just sucks and is no longer in their plans. There also have been rumors that he pissed someone in the front office at some point to, but I have no idea whether there is any validity to those.

Dan Wright needs to be on the 40-man even when he's out for the season?

I thought a lengthy DL stint would mean that he could be replaced on the roster.

He would have to clear waivers if he were taken off?

Wright could be moved to the 60-day DL if necessary, which would not take up a 40-man spot.

I don't understand why they don't do it then and add someone healthy.

Dan won't be pitching in the majors for a long time. He had major shoulder surgery.

Cotts has pitched well at times, .2004 Cotts

LH OPS-A - 850
RH OPS-A - 700
ERA (Road*) - 7.62

2003 Wunsch

LH OPS-A - 508
RH OPS-A - 515
ERA (Road) - 1.59

There is absolutely NO reason for Cotts to be in the bigs right now - a 1-pitch pitcher with no control who's been killing the team for a couple of months now. Wunsch was absolutely unhittable in 2003 ST and went on to have a pretty damn good, if injury-shortened regular season.

Unless Sox brass does not think he can regain the 2-3 mph lost, their treatment of Wunsch is nothing short of criminal. Bring him back, move Schoenweiss to the pen, whatever - we're hemorraging losses when Cotts and Jackson step on the mound.

* - considering how inept this team has shown to be on the road in recent years, premium should be placed on road production, pitching and hitting alike.
