I just heard on The Score that the Twins are trying to trade 1B Doug Mientkiewicz (http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/team/player.jsp?player_id=137006) to the Toronto Blue Jays for starting pitcher Miguel Batista (http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/team/player.jsp?player_id=110683). The Blue Jays will need a 1st baseman when Carlos Delgado most likely leaves to free agency. The Twins would rather keep the much younger and more talented 1B Justin Morneau but the Blue Jays may be pushing for Morneau instead. I would be disgusted if the Blue Jays don't at least get Morneau. Batista has been a pretty good pitcher this year and Mientkiewicz has been horrible offensively.

Batista's been pretty good. Hell, I'd like to have him.

And I hate Mientkiewicz. More like Mientkie-bitch. Such a whiner. I remember that great moment last year where he was trashtalking us, and then Garland plunked him.

He has no power and his numbers this season are embarrassing. How do the Twins expect to get Batista for this garbage?

Remember that Toronto traded Shannon Stewart last year for the great Bobby Kielty. Maybe Ryan and Ricciardi have a secret agreement no one knows about.

Remember that Toronto traded Shannon Stewart last year for the great Bobby Kielty. Maybe Ryan and Ricciardi have a secret agreement no one knows about. The reason the Blue Jays made that trade was because Stewart was set to become a free agent at the end up the year. Toronto wasn't going to resign Stewart so they wanted to get something for him. Kielty was under contract for 4 more years. So the Blue Jays ended up paying off the remainder of Stewart's $6.2 million salary and got the very inexpensive Kielty. But then the Blue Jays traded Kielty for Ted Lilly this past off-season anyways. It was an extremely well-timed trade by the Twins last season.

This season is a little different though. Toronto has Miguel Batista signed to a very inexpensive contract for a starting pitcher with his talent ($10 million for 3 years). That's why the low market Twins want him. Toronto know this so they are trying to pilfer one of the Twins two best prospects, Justin Morneau or Michael Restovich. Of course, the Twins being the Twins (cheap bastards), they offered washed up Doug Mientkiewicz. I don't see them getting Batista for that scrub. And they sure as hell won't be able to trade for Kris Benson. The Pirates are going to demand a major league-ready position player AND a top prospect for Benson, especially after the Cubs screwed them in the Aramis Ramirez trade last season.
