How about a realistic acquisition that would help the team materially and cost very little. THe biggest need right now is catcher. And Gregg Zaun of the Blue Jays, who is having a very good year offensively (.305BA with an OPS of .800) and decent year defensively (34.1% runners thrown out) must be available for cheap, especially with the Jays well out of the race.

Once we get Randy Johnson he can play catcher on all the days when he isnt scheduled to pitch. Im pretty sure I heard somewhere he has real good knees so I dont foresee a problem with this at all. Also, when he's pitching we can have our other acquisition, Carlos Beltran, play catcher.

Zaun is not a bad idea. He would be much cheaper and be an upgrade over what we have now. Id still like kendall, but the asking price will be too high I think, as well as the salary.

I have wanted Zaun all along. I would assume he is available...unlike Kendell who is a pipedream.

Zaun is entirely realistic. I posted it because it was such a non-pipe dream acquisition.

Excellent idea. This team need a boost offensively, as it seems that Frank may be lost for the year.

This is necessary. Sandy stinks, Burke stinks, and well, Davis is horrible. Please KW do something.

I know... Kenny can trade Garcia even up to get Olivia back!

PLus Zaun kills the Sox so that'd be an added bonus

Why? It isn't a rumor, and it's about Sox baseball...

You know, there are probably some on this board who would not have typed that in teal.

jp riccardi is good buddies with billy beane, and they both share the same philosophy- getting good, underrated players cheaply. given zaun's performance at his low salary, i would bet that riccardi probably values zaun more highly than most other teams, and would probably ask for more than KW would be willing to part with.

But more importantly....who the **** is Olivia, and when did women start playing in MLB?

What about Micheal Barrett? The Cubs are out of it aren't they?

Another presumably cheap guy I'd be interested in if I were KW is Matt Stairs. With Frank out, Stairs would be a nice fit as DH against right handed pitching. Over the last 3 years, he has a .892 OPS with 51 HRs in 841 ABs against righties. He's cheap ($1 million salary this year) and a FA at season's end. Probably wouldn't take much in trade to get him. The line-up against righties would be:

Harris
Uribe
Maggs
Lee
Valentin
Konerko
Stairs
Crede
Alomar/Burke/Dalesandro/Nordhagen/Whoever

At first I thought Gregg Zaun might be getting some cheap hits by playing on the turf in Toronto. But then I saw his home/road splits for this year:

HOME: .261 AVE. / .724 OPS
AWAY: .354 AVE. / .887 OPS

And I know it is a microscopic sample size (12 ABs), but he has been a monster at the Cell from 2001-2003: .417 AVE / .417 OBP / 1.000 SLG / 1.417 OPS. And he was even better at the Cell this year: .615 AVE, .615 OBP, .923 SLG, 1.538 OPS. Of course that's against Sox pitching, but perhaps he likes to hit in the Cell.

Then I saw that he's a switch hitter, and his left-handed hitting numbers this year actually are slightly better than his right-handed stats.

While I still would prefer Kendall, Zaun would be a great pickup, especially considering he doesn't have a huge contract.
