Given the CBS thread of the same name, I thought I'd start a thread for WSI'ers grades for individual Sox players. As in the two-month grade thread, my grades are relative to my fairly optimistic pre-season expectations (A - greatly exceeded, B - exceeded, C- met, D - missed, F - way below, I - incomplete):

Takatsu - A

Thomas - B
Konerko - B
Rowand / Perez - B
Harris / Uribe - B
Schoeneweis - B
Adkins - B

Lee - C
Valentin - C
Catching corps - C
Buehrle - C
Loaiza - C
Garland - C
Marte - C
Politte - C
Cotts - C

Crede - D
Jackson - D

Borchard - I
Ordonez - I
Garcia - I

With the notable exception of Takatsu, the grades generally have slipped a bit since the two-month mark, but it's nice to see that there currently are no major disappointments on the roster.

I gotta give Valentin a B on this. He's fielding has vastly improved and could end up with 35 homers this year!

I actually think Maggs deserves an "Incomplete" on this one. He hasn't been around enough for us to know what his numbers would really look like after half of a season of play.

I agree with other grades, though.

Why does Burke get a D? Did anybody really expect a .221 hitter in AAA to excel in the big leagues?

Why does Burke get a D? Did anybody really expect a .221 hitter in AAA to excel in the big leagues? And it matters how again? Standings don't know his back-story; all they care is about wins and losses.

He gets an 'F'.

IT doesn't really matter in terms of whether or not he sucks. The place the discrepancy comes in is that the original post had grades based on whether or not people met expectations . . . which implies that if someone really really sucks and is expected to contribute nothing, then if they do nothing you can't hold it against them grade wise even though they do suck.

I questioned Burke's grade based on expectations, not his objective performance. It seems all the grades take into account performance with respect to expectations. Otherwise, who wouldn't give Buehrle an A+ (9-2, ERA who cares) ?

Maggs is collecting 14 million dollars this year. He has not been performing at that level.

When he's been healthy, he has been typical mags (30 homer pace, .300+, 100 rbi, etc), which to me is A worthy.

whether or not "typical mags" numbers are worth 14 mil a year is another argument...

With the notable exception of Takatsu, the grades generally have slipped a bit since the two-month mark, but it's nice to see that there currently are no major disappointments on the roster.I agree mostly except that I would give Lee the B for his hitting streak and high average (I expected about .270 with more HR rather than .290 with fewer, which is fine w/me) and I would give Adkins a C because he's met but not exceeded my expectations. Josey I can't decide B or C so I'll give him B-.

I would disagree with the low Crede scores. I'm no fan of his, but he has been batting well since June. I would give him a C (based on his improvement vs. the expectations for him).

Rowand deserves at least a B, he is hitting almost .300 here. He started out slow but has heated up recently. He has made amazing defensive plays too.

I agree pretty much with your grades with these exceptions:
Schoeneweiss: C- (and falling)
Jackson: C (I just can't give him that +)
Thomas: B
Rowand: B-
Also, if Munoz gets a letter grade for one (stinking) game then Freddy should get a letter grade: B

I expected better than a .241 AVE / .297 OBP / .432 SLG at the break. His OBP is the worst on the team among players with more than 10 ABs in a Sox uniform. I'm confident he'll improve on these numbers over the second half (despite a crappy July so far), but my first-half grade for him remains a "D."
