They only wore them once in 1976.
If I remember correctly it was the second game of a doubleheader and the biggest complaint from the players was the shorts offered no protection for their legs if they wanted to slide.

It was the first game and I thought I remembered reading at the time that 'sliding pads' were inserted into the socks and shorts to try to give some protection.

I thought they changed out of the shorts before the second game due to George Scott saying they all "looked pretty".
