On this date (subtitle: Is There Hope?)

I was tooling around one of my favorite sites, retrosheet.org. I wanted to
check what the White Sox record was on this date in previous pennant
contending years. ( I do this when I get down about the overall way the
team is playing.) Here's what I found:

6/26/1983 35-34, 3 GB
6/26/1993 37-33, .5 GA
6/26/2003 36-41 5.5 GB

Of course, it isn't the record of the team that I'm down about so much
as the way they've played lately, which is badly. The 1983 and 93 squads
had similar records and pulled it together. The 1983 team also looked to be
a disaster in the making the first couple of months of the season. So maybe the 2004 Sox aren't as bad as they look right now and will pull it all together before the season is over. (Should I put that in teal, or deeppink, or what?)

The Sox are in a much better position now than they were at this time last season, so there is hope that they can turn things around. They do still have plenty of time do so. However, their pitching problems are going to continue to be a problem until KW is able to find a team willing to make a trade. Freddy Garcia's name continues to pop up, but it's looking less and less likley that the Sox will be able to accquire him. The only other American League team that is definitely out of a divisional race is the Royals, but their starters are worse than anyone the Sox currently have.

The 1983 and 1993 teams had pitching depth something this club does not have.

In fact the 83 team was so deep in starting pitching they had seven guys in spring training who had all won ten or more games in a single season in the big leagues.
