A three-way trade that would send Carlos Beltran (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6132) to Houston and Octavio Dotel (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6111) to Oakland is "very close" to being completed, a baseball official with knowledge of the talks tells ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. According to two sources, the trade could happen Thursday night.

http://adsatt.espn.go.com/ad/sponsors/blank/blank-espn.gif (http://log.go.com/log?srvc=sz&a=1&drop=0&addata=1331:53574:141468:65&guid=A9A1F7E4-06F9-4DE3-80E8-3195401A1513&goto=)
According to sources, Dotel would wind up in Oakland, where he would take over as the closer in a bullpen that has more blown saves (14) than saves (13).

Beltran would land in Houston, where he would succeed Craig Biggio (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=4217) as the Astros' center fielder. Biggio probably would move to left field.

And Kansas City would get Oakland's highly regarded third-base prospect Mark Teahan, plus two other players. Cash also would change hands in the deal.

THis is incredible!

Wow. The first big trade of season. Very interesting stuff. The A's get a closer that they desperately need. The Astros add a big bat that could make them the best offense in baseball if everyone there starts to hit like they can. Biggio to left field? I think Biggio to 2nd and Kent to 3rd makes more sense, but we'll see.

So, this means we can forget about any Beltran trades and focus on pitching. The bad news now. With Beltran getting traded, it turns the attention to Freddy Garcia for teams such as the Red Sox, Yankees, etc. We're gonna have a lot of competition for him now.

I hope so. Seeing a big trade like this go down just makes me jealous that we aren't the ones acquiring a big time player. Come on KW!

Way to go, Astros!

Maybe the [my 2nd-fave team] Cardinals can pick up a pitcher now.

Jeez, what league are you in that he hasn't already been picked up? The guys got a 2 something era and 64 strikeouts in only 43 innings.

This is all according to the AP, although KC hasn't officially announced anything yet.

Well, if we couldn't get Beltran, I think Houston is the team I wanted to see him go to. Go 'Stros...win that Central!

What are the new board rules in terms of what goes where? Doesn't this directly affect the Sox considering KC is in the division?

Anyone else notice, by the way, how the team hosting the All-Star Game always seems to be in contention to go deep into the playoffs.

Houston 2004
White Sox 2003
Seattle 2001
Atlanta 2000
Red Sox 1999
Indians 1997

Unless they trade for one yes. Lidge's numbers are as good as any closer on a contending team, except the ERA is inflated a bit

2.61 ERA
13.94 K/9
.97 WHIP
.184 BAA
64/13 K/BB

I think its more funny that we're the only team that didn't. Or sad. Let's go with sad.

Breaking news on ESPN. Sources say Beltran will go to Houston in a three-way deal involving the A's, Astros and Royals. The A's get Dotel and the Royals get third base prospect Mark Teahan and a pitcher from the A's as well as a top catching prospect from the Astros. I don't have the link, but you can find the story on the ESPN website.

That wasn't the case in 1990. The Cubs hosted the game, and they finished in last place. LOL!

yea,i'm watching part of the astros game and they had the GM on the air and they were all giggling away as they broke the news to their fans.
I don't know how houstons bullpen will be now that they traded away their only good BP pitcher.

and now carlos beltran can go toy with the other chicago team. if he wasnt going to the sox, im glad he went to houston. it helps us sox fans in 2 ways, we dont have to watch him play the sox, and he hurts the cubs.

Only? They still have Lidge. Munro and Gallo are decent, too [but the latter especially for Red, not White].

We better get a front line starter PRONTO!!!

I personally like the LEE/Rowand/Maggs ourfield.

One good thing is the Sox still have 10-14 games left against KC where they don't have to face him, while the Twins have already played them a bunch this year. This just made the four game series at the end of September a whole lot easier. (Assuming the Sox are still in the race.) Hopefully, Randa, Juan Gone, Sullivan will all be gone as well.

Looks like Beane has made his 'F**** A' trade.

I'm glad to see Beltran wind up with the Astros., It gets him out of the AL so the Sox don't have to see him and also gets him into the Cubs division.

Go Astros!!!! (or Reds or Cardinals)

Didn't see another thread on this. Houston won the bidding war for Beltran last night, though it took a 3-way trade with Oakland to do it.
