I saw this one earlier today. To me, it looks like they are overvaluing closers. Does anyone really believe closers would win both AL & NL Cy Youngs?

Erm...so last night was out-of-character for Cy Benitez, eh?

I would expect a 3 page article tomorrow in the Trib from Moronotti Bashing ESPN for not including the Passion or Kerry "the greatness" Wood

Who believes that poll anyways? Armando Benitez in front of eventual Cy Young award winner Roger Clemens?? Reminds me of the BCS

If the closers keep going at this rate then yes, that's just unlikely. But if Graves saves 70 games, don't you think he'll get it?

not if clemens wins 20 games. The only reason, I think, Gagne won last year was for lack of legitimate contenders.

I buy it. Buehrle is getting something like 8 or 9 runs of support per game. 8 or 9 runs of support would win me 20 games! Yeah, I see his ERA is 3.65, but at 3.65, I would expect something in the order of 5-3, instead of 7-1.

It's just another formula. Boils down to this:

1 pt. for every ER below what having an ERA of 5.00 would be at that # of innings pitched.

1 pt. for every 12 strikeouts

2.5 pts. for every save

1 pt. per shutout

6 pts per win

-2 pts. per loss

+ a 'victory bonus' based on team's standing up to a max of 12 pts for finishing in first place (pro rated over the season)

One major flaw I see it that relievers aren't penalized for blown saves unless they also get the loss, and are rewarded for a blown save if they get a win. Also rankings should start favoring starters as they pile up more IP.

What a joke...Buehrle should be way higher. There's two Twins pitchers in there. Rincon and Nathan, both relievers. Rincon's a total vulture, he's got 8 wins for a middle reliever. Whatever.
