I've been reading all the threads over the last couple of weeks by Hangar 18 and others, about the media bias towards the Cubs in the papers, and on the Score, namely the "Mike Murphy Morning Cub Show". I could not agree more. I listen to the Score at my desk at work from 8:30 till 5. Generally, I like the station, but lately, I've become more and more agrivated with Murph, and find myself turning the radio off till 10 a.m. His show is an absolute joke. He is constantly saying how "we've got Cubs and Sox talk coming up", or "Sox fans, Cub fans, give us a call, we wanna hear what your thinking"; he then procedes to spend segment after segement going on and on about the Cubs, taking calls from listeners like "Cubbie John" or "Maddux Boy", interupted only by commercials. The amount of time spent talking about the Sox in the 90 minutes that he's on when I'm listening is maybe 10 minutes. He'll maybe take a call from a Sox fan, or they'll briefly discuss some managerial move Ozzie made, but then it's right back to Cub talk. What makes it even worse, is that he's often incorrect in some of his statements, and when people call him on it, like Piersall did this morning, he sort of poo-poos it , and once again, quickly breaks for a commercial. What's also bad, is anytime somebody calls him out about not talking enough White Sox, he, like alot of others in the media- (Newspapers, etc.) turns it around on the caller, saying that they're just being "typical bitter, pessimistic Sox fan, quit complaining, blah blah blah..." I'm glad to see alot of other people feel the same way I do about this. Sorry, that's my rant for today I guess. Oh, and would someone tell Murph to clear his throat or something. It sounds like he has a tunafish sandwich caught in there.

I can't stand Murphy anymore. His bias towards the Cubs just permeates the entire broadcast. Case in point, this morning they were talking about the Sox/Phillies game last night. Not a minute into the conversation, Murphy has to start asking the reporter how EX-CUB LARRY BOWA is doing lately. He'll do anything to twist the conversation towards the Cubs.

Murph is one of "those 3000 unemployed so-called fans out here every day, ripping everything you do," a bleacher bum glorifying losing and thinking it clever to palm a home run and throw back a fake one to fool all the idiots from Iowa even dumber than the drunks sitting with him inside that putrid pisshole of a ballpark.

Do everyone a favor and stop listening to that ****. And please stop talking about that ****ing ******* at WSI.

How do you really feel about it? lol

I kinda like North FROM TIME TO TIME. When he let's his sthick down long enough he seems like a decent human being.
Buffone's name is apropriate.
Jay Hood is alright from what I hear.
Living 2 hours east I barely get a chance to listen.
I'm stuck listening to Mike and Mike and Colin Cowherd(eek)
So it could be worse.
And if you're a masochist (most of us seem to be) then listening to Murph and Fred seems like a good fit.
I personally don't listen.

Murph usually talks about the Sox from 5:30 am - 5:45 am . Southside Bob calls in and thats about the extent of the cub free Sox talk.

I haven't listened to the show since the Scores "baseball expert" Mickey Morandini said he doesn't follow the White Sox.

Tuning the radio on in the morning while getting ready for work is a habit I've had for a long time.

WGN- isn't a viable option, I don't want a farm report.

WLS- has probably the biggest idiot in the history of talk radio on in the morning, Don Wade.

WBBM- I don't need traffic reports, I live a couple of miles from work.

ESPN- I get enough Yankee/NY Giant coverage from ESPN tv.Plus any station that has Moronotti is suspect.

105.9- I'm not into lesbian sex / porn stars / or 8th grade locker room talk

101.1- Mancow could be as bad as Howard Stern if he tried harder. Complete garbage.

93.1 - a bit to cubbish , but the best option for tunes.

1690- animal stories/uncle Lar and snot nose Tommy.

Moving the alarm clock a 1/2 hour ahead is probably the smartest move. Just don't like doing a Bumstead out the door for work.

As soon as 6 o'clock hits I switch to Stern. At the completely opposite end of the spectrum I will listen to NPR during Stern commercials.

I think Fred gets off too easily from abuse for being complicit in the Murph/Fred morning Cub-o-thon. He is supposed to be the Sox fan. He is supposed to be the one interjecting a balance. However he sits there like a bump.

Since it was Murph's show before Fred came on the scene, I'm sure Murphy has told him to play the part of second banana. That is why he never contradicts Murph and has almost zero input in the direction of the show. However if this guy had any pride he would be looking to get equal billing or fill a different time slot.

The Score needs an entire revamping. I listend to murph & Fred just because it's local. I think Murph must have some kind of disease in that his mouth always has to say "Cubs" every 5 minutes. He even does this during football season.

Hopefully the Sox will be on the Score soon and the Score does an entire revamping of all the shows. Unfortunately, no matter what, Dan Bernstein will still be there due to the unfortunate new contract he received. Boers and Bernstein together are a completely classless tandem. Separately they're ok, but still not that likeable. I did enjoy listening to the 10-2 shift when Boers was out, and then when Bernstein was out with contract talks going on. Since they're together again, I don't listen. I long for the days of the original Score(except for Tom Shaer), the Monsters, Heavy Fuel, T-Dub, and the Grobber.

Thanks for the thought!! Funny thing is,when I was hosting Overnights and Sat Evenings on the Score,I probably got more calls from Sox Fans than Cub Fans even tho I am a Cub Fan myself,,,,but nobody ripped on the Cubs when they had it coming, more than me,and plenty of Cub Fans used to get pissed at me for not 'sucking up' to the Cubs even when they were horrible, which they were in 1997,99 & 2000.
The time I spent at ESPN 1000,I refused to call the Sox Ballpark by it's new corporate name, but never caught any bad feedback from Management for that. Probably because when new Management got there, they almost never listened to TDub or myself on the air, since they had no plans to keep that show, and just did'nt care about it.

I like my sports talk smart...old athletes like Buffone or Jiggetts don't do anything for me.

In the realm of that smart talk, I really enjoy Mike & Mike in the morning, Mariotti, Dan & Terry, and SOMETIMES, Mac, Jurko and Harry. I loved Tony Kornheiser, but he is no more.

I can listen to Carmen and Silvey sometimes, but just for silly banter.

I abhore Mike North & Murph and Fred.

Grobber,

Do you have any idea of what is going on at your ex-employer ESPN 1000? It sounds like a mess over there with Synder getting the axe, Rome on the verge of being pulled, fueding with Reinsdorf, mixed results for Mariotti; plus it seems like Mac, Jurko and Harry are regressing with aweful preperation and constant feuding (I think the three-man radio booth may of hit the end of the road)?

The only programming on that station that I enjoy (besides Sox and Bulls games) is Carmen and Silvy.

Unfortunatly,I know TOO MUCH of what's going on there, and that's a small reason I left in late April. Len Weiner is good guy,but never intended to use me for anything other than small stuff other than covering the Bears games(Silvy never goes to the games,he does the shows with DD & Mongo). Now that I've quit, look for someone like Jeff Dickerson to cover Bears games for them-I'll just work for the Network.
Len would not let me host, and would'nt say why,so it was time to move on.
Rome was only put on since he is paying about $250,000 to them and they are trying to make up for the Red Ink the Sox contract is causing them, which is another reason they put a Cubs show on(to make money & to tick off Mr.Reinsdorf)and Bob Snyder may have been let go due to that as well.
Snyder called a meeting last year to tell the Staff that putting Rome on was 'not a sellout'. We all knew that was BS!! It sure was'nt to get listenership. That Program(to me at least)is mostly unlistenable.
Mac,Jurko & Harry need to be promoted more than they have been. The Score promote's "The Wise Guys" much better than ESPN promotes MJH.
Jay & I get along well, and he actually wanted me to Co-Host with him(we worked together in 1994 at the 'Old' WMVP)but Len said no.
Hope that answers some of your thoughts about 1000.

Just a question, but couldn't the Sox and Bulls land on WBBM instead of WSCR? I live in Florida, but even here WSCR is seen as one of the worst radio stations in the sports genre.

What have they done to WMAQ? Damn CBS/Infinity

There is a lot about the Score that I do not like, but I would hardly call it one of the worst radio stations in the sports genre, Cape. In some ways, I wish other sports radio stations (including South Florida's Sportsradio 560 WQAM) would be more like the Score is.

As for 'QAM, I like Hank Goldberg afternoon drive and I adore Neil Rogers' non-sports show midday. However, I think 'QAM is somewhat dull with "Moe Howard" David (as Rogers refers to Howard David's morning drive). Also, I think Jim Mandich is too whiny. Adding to those I like about 'QAM, I think Ed Kaplan brings a lot to the table.

Nevertheless, I think that if WQAM had a Score-like edgy persona, it would be more impactful to South Florida sports fans.

CapeFish
06-16-2004, 10:53 PM
You like Neil Rogers? He doesn't spend much time in SoFla anymore. I get tired of WQAM when all they do is put down the Marlins and talk Dolphins 24/7 except when the Marlins, Panthers, or Hurricanes have play-by-play basically.

Eddie Kaplan doesn't fall that great with me, but he is not bad. I cannot stand Rogers and Goldberg though. They are so rude and think that they deserve everything and that people should kiss their feet. That's why WQAM's ratings are so low they always are shuffling programming. I wish they would just quit sportstalk and go to talk, but that would never happen.

We are such a pitiful sportsradio market. We have three stations, all weaklings, (WQAM, WRFX, and WFFL) and non is worth listening too.

Manbitch and David are annoying. Why can't the Dolphins ever surround themselves by classy people? Couldn't they have Joe Zagacki (WQAM and Canes personality on the radio) call Dolphins games with someone who is better than Mandich like Marino or Nat Moore?

But WQAM has no common sense or respect, so we continue to have a pitiful flagship for the four biggest sports teams in SoFla. The Heat are on Newsradio 610 WIOD and they have excellent ratings and an excellent signal.

Real Marlins fans (who speak Spanish) listen to WQBA, our real flagship and 50kw blowtorch. WQAM can't carry a candle to WQBA in sportstalk. They devote entire hours to the Dolphins and Marlins and dissect every little thing from the hole in Choi's swing to why Beckett can't get rid of his blisters. No insulting, no namecalling, no stupidity.

Juan Pierre trying to speak spanish on the Friday talk show "Cafecito con los Marlins" (Coffee with the Marlins) was good, but it was more insightful than anything WQAM could air.

Also McKeon boycotts WQAM esp. Goldberg for always badmouthing him and questioning him about things like not using Armando in the 7th.

That's another of the most disgusting features of the Score--their abysmally low/non-existent standards for advertising--Heavenly Bodies, bookie numbers and web sites, "male enhancement" products, "rejuvenation" formulas, etc., etc. The Score's advertising target demographic must be male, sexually dysfunctional, alcoholic, gambling cretins.....

Demonstrating how after a while you learn to ignore most of this crap: I remember several years ago when I was in a habit of regularly listening to the Score (thankfully, it was better then than it is now) and my then 7 year-old asked me if I had ever been to "Heavenly Bodies"? I told him no, and apologized that Dad needed to pay closer attention to monitoring the sort of crud he listened to on the radio....

Wait a minute, isn't that Mike North, or just about any host on that station?

WQAM no longers airs ads for Strip Clubs. Gambling (hello they have Hank Goldberg), Car dealerships, and sports events are still aired.

Les: I too am wondering where the sox go in thier next contract? I think am1000 was a big mistake for the sox even with the cash. Sox need a better signal that goes to central illinois and iowa and wiscosin. they have conceded the regional market to the cubs and it is going to haunt them for years. I could live with 780bbm or 670score. At least they reach out west and south rather than east over the lake. lottsa fans on that lake. Also if score got the contract it would reduce the number of hours that their ridiculous line-up would have to fill.

Also if score got the contract it would reduce the number of hours that their ridiculous line-up would have to fill. The Sox(Mr.Reinsdorf)went for the big bucks in 1995-96 when they signed with WMVP. Former WMVP Boss Jim DeCastro wanted the BULLS back(after losing them after 1991)and he even walked around the halls saying he was going to get them back no matter what,or whom it effected. He did alright! It forced over 40 people to lose their jobs and he never apologized for that!! He over paid big time, and I remember how Steve Dahl was acting like he had just won the lottery when the Station got the Sox and Bulls. They paid WAY too much and can not break even--not even if they sold out every spot at full rate-which they don't come close to doing(not even during 2000 season when they won the Division). ESPN wanted to negotiate the deal down with Reinsdorf(they offered him many perks) and he of course laughed at them-I suppose I would have done the same. Now that the deal is winding down,ESPN has the trump card, and in my oppinion, they will either get the Sox and Bulls renewed at WAY less $$$ which is what Jerry is trying to avoid, or ESPN will let Jerry go elsewhere and they may put even more of their National Network stuff on--which is all they really care about anyway. The Score is being courted by Jerry--proof of that is when he invited them to do remotes in Comiskey this season above objections of WMVP. That's to get back at them for putting Jay and a Cub weekly show on which Jerry could have stopped prior to 1998,but not now. Since I left WMVP in late April(on my own),,I can talk about this crap more freely than before.
As I've said before,,,THE PLOT THICKENS!!!!!

Thanks, Grobber. Great to get a little insight. It's too bad things didn't work out with Jay's show, it would of been nice to have you there to smack him around a little bit :D:

I'm with you though, Rome is horrible!

They've met many times. Murph and Fred would be on right after Les, back when he was on the Score.

I'm interested in Les' thoughts on how much Cub talk Murph pushes on his show.

Guys,,I have'nt seen Murph in about two years. He and I got along just fine while I was there but after I got whacked,I have heard very little from him,Fred or Bernstein.(When I got bounced, the Guys I heard from quickly were North,Hood,Ofman,Schuster,Olken,Piersall, and a few Producers. That's when you learn who your real Friends are!) Perhaps they did'nt want to piss off Management by talking to me-who knows? I will say this for Murph. He has no lost love for Andy McPhail and Tribune Company. Other than myself,he likely ripped on Cub Management as much as anyone on the Score.
But,as of July 25th,I will have been off the Air on that Station for three years(hell,I only worked there 4 1/2 years)so it's well in my rear view mirror!!

I don't even listen to sports radio in chicago (unless its the actual sox broadcast and im in my car unable to watch the game) because of the obvious bias.

Normally i just listen to good old 97.9 the loop. 2fer tuesdays and block party sundays- mostly consisting of great classic rock. 97.1 and 93.1 have some good rock too, and sometimes i flip it over the the alternative stations. But as far as sports talkradio goes, I've given up on it.
