According to an ESPN 2 "Cold Pizza" poll. In case you're not in the know, ESPN 2's "Cold Pizza" show has been listing week by week the cities that have suffered the most futility according to polls and e-mails sent into their show. From 15 to 1, each city is revealed every Tuesday with special pieces and interviews with local media and fans of the city's more popular teams. As of this week, the show has reached #3 on the countdown, and Chicago's the place.
I only caught the last few minutes of the piece, but our very own Jay Mariotti, who is also a panelist on the blab-fest, "Around the Horn", was talking with a host of the show along with...you guessed it...a "tortured" Cubs fan not only promoting his website, but also talking about just how much Chicago NEEDS the Cubs to win a World Series.
Now, you might be thinking, "Wait a minute. The Bears won in 1985, and the Bulls won 6 NBA titles back in the 90's. How could they be on this list with cities like Seattle, Minneapolis, San Diego, Band Houston?" Well, part of the criteria to make this list has to do with not only a team winning, but also how the city represented feels about it. In other words, as Mariotti put it, its good the people of Chicago like winning 6 NBA titles, but it's more important to a lot of fans for a baseball world championship...especially if the Cubs win it.
Here's a link to ESPN.com's "Page 2", where you're supposed to read an on-line version of the TV pieces. It hasn't been updated since #5...Boston. (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=tortured/boston)
And guess what, folks...at least the parts of the piece I saw had ABSOLUTELY NO MENTION of the White Sox. However, Cold Pizza airs again on ESPN 2 at 9AM eastern time, so if anyone can watch the piece, which will air at the start of the 2nd hour, I'd appreciate a full report on the entire piece.
BTW...if you want that Cubs website, its right here. (http://www.cubsanonymous.com)
