They're just being extremely cautious.

God I hope he's fine, but I'm not appreciating the level of honesty given with respect to this injury. He was "ready to play" after missing 1 game ... 5 days later and now he's missed 5 games and no more status information anywhere to be seen. That may be how Dusty and Hendry handle injuries, but Ozzie seemed to be upfront and honest about everything before now.

Where's his complaint to the newspapers about the lack of a "Magglio Watch?" Thomas was out for 3 days and Ozzie made that statement.

From the Tribune:

The Sox were without right fielder Magglio Ordonez, still nursing an strained upper calf muscle.

Ordonez doesn't think he will need to go on the disabled list, but he conceded that if he's not back in the lineup in Seattle on Friday, it might have to be an option.

"I'll just wait a couple more days and if I don't feel better then I guess I'll have to go on the DL," Ordonez said before Tuesday night's loss to the A's. Ordonez, who strained a muscle at the top of the calf behind the knee while hitting against Texas May 25, thought he would be back in the lineup after one day off. Six games later, he wonders when he will feel good enough to play again.

"I never thought it would be this long," he said. "You get frustrated. You want to play and you can't because it's sore."

In the immediate future, the Sox need Ordonez back on the field.

"I don't want to take a risk by putting him in the game," manager Ozzie Guillen said.

Ordonez took batting practice Tuesday, but said it hurts when he runs. A magnetic resonance imaging test has come up negative, revealing no tear in the muscle.

"[The injury] is more distracting than anything else," Ordonez said. "

...and according to Bruce Levine in yesterday's pregame show, Maggs would probably take Wednesday off too. That, coupled with Thurdsay's off day, should help him return to the lineup on Friday.

You might see Magglio as a PH at a critical point today, but I suspect that would be about it. He almost hit after Valentin last night, until Manos tied it up with his blast, & Ozzie pulled him back from the on deck circle.

Hopefully he'll be ready for Seattle, as it leaves the Sox a lot less lineup options than when he's in there. For example, Manos was brutal with three Ks on the lefty Redman last night until he got the opportunity against RHP Mecir in the 9th.

By Friday, June 4 we will have seen him miss 9 days. If we had put him on the DL he would be eligible for return on the 10th. Why not call up someone yesterday and give them a shot for a week and a half? I'm a fan of Maggs, I want to see him in there, but if he's going to be out for 9-10 days, why not use the roster spot and keep him out 15.

And an article from yesterday's or today's Tribune does not mean they handled the injury situation well and kept fans informed for the first 6 days of the injury. Especially after it seemed he could play after missing 1 game.
